Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • This is an interesting one, Im not a regular drinker but always enjoyed a pint of lager a glass or two of wine and the odd Gin, I went about five months without drinking after diagnosis and treatment then had a few pints to celebrate when I got the good news on the 18th April, it tasted as I remembered if even better and surprisingly I wasn’t that effected in drunk terms, I thought I would be leathered!

So Iv been having the odd pint, three weeks ago I met up with a couple of friends and had about 8 pints and was fine, pretty drunk but no more than usual. Then last weekend I was in Blackpool with a large group of mates 20+ for a football tournament and presentation staying over, we usually play on artificial grass but this was on real grass and because of the constant rain the pitches became waterlogged and it was called off.

We still had the presentation to come in the evening but we were in Blackpool and had time to kill, only thing for it...Wetherspoons, 12 hours of drinking and lost count but got through it, lots of food eaten to soak it up and felt no worse than usual and not had a drink since last Saturday because I don’t crave it but enjoy it when I do It especially socially.

A big part of it for me is that I am stubborn and won’t give in to what has happened and want to keep my life as unaffected as possible, if it was ever a case of being told not to drink by a doctor I would stop immediately.

  • Thanks for posting a reply Dave and quite well put to be honest.

You seem to have a good balance and pretty much back to normal drinking habits even though you can manage a proper binge session as well. I would be on floor ill with 8 pints beer but could sink vokda for 12 hrs ok.

Your also not called SuperDave for nothing.....your plan was to play a full game of football then onto a presentation..itself impressive.. but you managed to have a 12 hours drinking session plus eating lots of what you like. So we can take it your eating and drinking is fine and trouble free.
I think even your cheery wee soul of a consultant might even stretch to give you a wry smile and say well done on your recovery. I would say that througout the thread and other posts etc on the site that you have probably been the best example of showing that in some cases its possible to bounce back reasonably quickly after treatment and back to as normal a lifestyle as before.
I may be wrong but just as I'm convinced that my heath and condition going into treatment has played a part in a somewhat longer recovery period, I'm equally convinced that the fact you were reasonably fit by all accounts going into treatment, has contributed and had a big part in how well you have done since treatment finished.

I think it's a good balance you have as it's pretty much what you did before so thats a mental plus and also great you still enjoy your pint(s) with your mates as and when you choose.Let's face it , you aint going to get 20+ lads popping out for tea and scones in a wee cafe.

    Ian.

  • Hi Dave

well done I think I would still be in bed a week later lightweight that I am. Lol.

The suoerdave mantle still applies ,agree on let’s get back to living our life’s.

Enjoy Greece next week you both deserve it !

    H xx

  • Thanks Ian and Hazel, it’s also true that I wasn’t as bad as both of you at the beginning from what I can gather which shouldn’t be ignored and caught my situation very early which helped from day one, we are all different in that respect. Eating and drinking is pretty normal for me now and no problems swallowing, My tongue is very sensitive still so nothing spicy yet,

Iv gone off red meat  and prefer fish as an option. Not sure if it’s related to what’s happened with the treatment ?As for being resilient to alcohol I think drinking so much water helps buffer the effects, I always drank plenty of water but obviously drink even more now.

  • 16 weeks post radio now........To  Ian here on the "alcohol" question,( but great to see all these positives, and nicknames!! ) Im managing a few pints, and a few wines, nothing like before, maybe a good thing! Happy to just drink a little, gradually may increase, if not then that is ok.

My saliva is identical to Dave, mouth near throat. Breakthrough with night dryness, thanks Hazel, xylimelts really help, buying more. I too have the niggly doubts awaiting scan results, keep you all posted, also im near normal on food, even sweet chilli, mild curry, dry at back of  but peppery things not so good!

  • Hi Graeme,

Thanks for responding as I was just a little curious re where others were on alcohol before and after.

Rooting for you re your scan and although understand the agnst that goes with the waiting and results therafter, no reason to suspect you will not be another success story on here and have had a good response to treatment. All is going to be good.

Your doing great after treatment and good that your able to pretty much eat what you want and enjoying a few pints wine.

Also remember you are only 16 weeks post treatment so fab signs.
Defo all good for you and keep us posted on scan results.

  • Hi Hazel

charts are postponed until Monday. I have eaten a full large sized bag of crisps and although can stick a bit sometimes, wonderful. I put it down to the stress of impending Buzz movie.

Thats good re saliva/ bloods but understand that it can vary from day to day.
I had a bacon roll with crusy roll last week and was fab but this morning I couldnt eat. Strange how ok to eat one day but not the next.
