Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • oh Clara the moment you mentioned cremola.

wow lol...dont know if anyone remembers cremola foam?
Little tins of fizzy powder and I remember raspberry and lemon tins and you put in water and stirred. You then got an initial little head on and the most wonderful fizzy drink.
I think a few have tried to recreate but with no success and recipe was lost i think oh and you can never replicate woolies pick and mix selection !

This has stirred a few childhood memories of favorite sweeties and goodies at the time lol

  • Hi Jaxter

Its good to hear that our experiences are useful to others and if there were good things to come out of cancer then this is one of them.

My hubby had a lump appear in his neck - he had had a cold so we thought it was to do with that. We sort if forgot about it and he decided to get stuck in with his running. He lost a few pounds and 5 weeks later we noticed the lump was still there and a bit bigger. So iff to the GP and to cut a long story short he was diagnosed with stage 3 tonsil cancer and lymph node tumours. A big shock for a non smoking, vegetarian, running , minimal drinking 54 yr old. Even more if a shock for me as a nurse as I hadn’t even heard if tonsil cancer.

So our journey began - tonsillectomy and biopsies, 5 cycles of Cistplatin chemotherapy and 30 fractions of VMAT radiotherapy plus a neck dissection and here we are nearly 3 years cancer free.

Its a tough arduous road - not just for the person with the cancer but for their families too. As his main carer you will need to be strong when he isnt able to be and it can be a very lonely time.

Its great that youve read Hazel and Ians blogs abd I wish Id written one from the carers perspective as Im sure it woukd have been of help to others . Anyway good luck with the dentist tomorrow- I had been strong until we saw the dentist and Paul had to have 4 teeth removed that were healthy but could cause problems following the treatment in the future. So please be prepared for any possibility.

If you’d like to ask any questions or chat then feel free to send me a friend request and if I can help then Id be happy to.

    best wishes

  • Clara - get us some cremola and you have a deal lol

  • Lol Ian.

We are showing off our ages here :-) Cremola foam made in Glasow in the 1950s and 60s. My mums favourite was the orange flavour. And you are correct the re-invented one was rubbish and she hated it and never bought it again.

There is a company selling it I think a Polish name, bet its awful though.

I loved new tatties (cinnamon dusted candy) and chelsea whoppers. I am a sweetie fiend you know :-)

    xx

  • Hi Clara going for  film rights as  well. Lol of course u csn oroof read it all proceeds to H & N cancer research. It is the fastest growing one st the min my oncologist is hoping when the boys get started on vaccines this September that by 2050 it is starting to be eradicated so our grandkids hopefully or get grandkids won’t get it.

Cremola I can’t remember it thankfully or maybe I didn’t like it . Although blancmange was another thing I remember mum dishing up xx

  • Great news my doc says the scan shows that the treatment has worked and Iv responded really well, when I asked if that meant I had the all clear he said no we can never say for five years and I will have to look for signs of it returning especially in the first year but this is as good as it gets, no signs of cancer showed up in the PET scan, we are out celebrating later what a 61 st birthday present...its the one I wanted :D

  • Great stuff Dave and well done.. It's also good for everyone on here to read all of our positive outcomes after treatment. Another positive story to re enforce that the light at the end of the tunnel exists.
Mind you, my consultant was a little more positive with his language and message.

Really pleased for you and a great birthday present.

    Onwards & Upwards

    Ian

  • Thanks Ian he does play it down with his language thats how he`s been from day one, never over the top so Im used to to that, it shows how we have different experiences with our consultants.

He said i`ll never get my saliva back fully to where it was so im going to have to prove him wrong.

    Dave

  • Hi Dave great new s onwards and upwards from here. Was thinking about you this morning happy birthday enjoy and celebrate. Ageee all consultant s gave differing ways of delivering the news but the pet ct scans are as good as we can have u know w some hospitals only do ct scan. Happy Easter to everyone no matter where you are on the journey. Onwards n upwards to infinity and beyond. Keep in touch suoernan

Challenge is good saliva has 2 years to improve  I am finding chewing sugar free gum with xylitol is helping makes sure it’s xyitol and not sorbitol as the main ingredient as we have to protect our teeth  look online
