Appetite After Head And Neck Radiotherapy

Can anyone offer advice please?

My husband had 30 radiotherapy sessions which ended mid Feb and has been steadily losing his appetite.

He eats very little and manages 2 or 3 Calogen shots a day. He says he feels full and bloated all  the time.

How can I help him?

having been through the same process ... if your hubby had a peg and was fed through a tube ... it’s strange but you get used to not eating and because you have no taste and the throat is sore .... you just dont bother .... and that’s not a good way to carry on

    its little and often

soups, an aromatic curry .... not too spicy, but with lots of source ... don’t expect him to eat a lot as not only has the stomach got used to not eating , so has the brain.

it also becomes a bit psychological in that you can’t eat all that you likes before .... radiation will have impacted the teeth to the point that chocolate and iced caked will be out of the question. Bread is a no go as it just saps any saliva and will become difficult to swallow

if you want a strange solution .... baby food ...it’s the right consistency to get down and it’s about the right size of meal he will be used to .... it takes a strong mind to do this as for a 52 year old man enjoying baby food ... well I just don’t look right .... but it got me back eating ... he might be passed this point though.

If sent you a copy of my blog page at about a few weeks on from where your hubby is now ... I hope it helps

  • Be patient-  I had H&N and a feeding tube for months, he will get to eat runny stuff like soups and custard, then mash potato loads of gravy then move on to other things over time. It’s been over 1 year since my radio and chemo ended.

Bread is challenging and pasta - I can’t eat a steak or bacon as no saliva glands and lost teeth as a result but I’m getting stronger, I lost 7 stone but slowly putting it on. I love sponge puddings and custard or cream and the calories are fab. I still have a 2 cal shake or two each day to get vitamins and nutrition in me. Wish him well and you too.
