My husband, 32, has advanced bowel cancer

Hi everyone. In November 2017, my 32 year old hubby was diagnosed with bowel cancer. He didnt display the classic symptoms but was fobbed off for months by numerous health professionals and told he had IBS. I hear this story so often.

The tumour was removed but we were dealt a further blow in February when we were told it has spread to his liver and perotenium.

I have just released a blog documenting our journey so far from my point of view as i find it quite lonely dealing with this, especially as we are both so young and have a yound daughter. If any of you would like a read, follow or get in touch, please do.

If i can help just one person feel less alone in all of this, It will be worth it.

  • I am so sorry to read of your husband's situation. The incidence of bowel cancer for someone in their early 30s is 6 in 100,000 so it's not surprising that doctors prefer to diagnose IBS instead, because 99% of the time they're right.  Unfortunately, it's the patient who suffers when the doctor gets it wrong.

  • Hi GemKent, I have just read your blog. You write really well. Your husband is so unlucky, getting struck down with bowel cancer at such a young age. And it is clear that the medical profession, pre-diagnosis, let him down badly. But at least he is now being treated at a world class institution for bowel cancer. He could not be treated in a better place. I wish you, your husband, and your daughter, every strength, and all the luck, in the world. xx Harry

  • Hi - you are doing so well - not only to cope with your husband's illness, family, work and to communicate in a way that helps others.  From a similar situation but a few months further on, my experience is that you will find it easier to compartimentalise your life so that cancer is only a part of it - not the central point.  Wishing you well, keep writing, keep going
