DCIS

I had a mastectomy with immediate reconctrucrion on my right breast beast in June 2017 with sentinel lymph node biopsy. The final histology revealed that there was 33mm of high grade DCIS, which was fully excised and the sentinel lymph node was negative and there was no invasive disease.

After my new breast has settled in December, I felt a lump on my upper left side of the the same breast . This was exactly where I felf a lump in the beginning before I had my mastectomy. I had another biopsy on the lump and it revealed a DCIS.

I then had a lumpectomy in February 2018 and a radiotherapy has been advised as a follow up treatment.

Please has anyone had this kind of experience, a mastectomy followed bt a lumpectomy. My consultant was not explaining clearly to me why. I beleive the lump wasnt removed  when I had the mastectomy.

I also want to ask if a radiotherapy is necessary now.

  • Hi there betty ... I'm a grade 3 her 2 lass ... I was given the choice of lumpectomy or total mastectomy .. on thinking it over, the Dr had said if any of it was left then mastectomy after ... so l plumped for a total strait off ... so not sure how common it is in same breast ... that could be why radiotherapy is on the cards to back up the surgery... but I'm no expert , just like you I'm a patent ...

Hope that helps a little ... Chrissie x

  • Dear Chrisse

Thanks for your reply. I just thought having a mastectomy means ALL breast tissues has been removed, as such radiotherapy should not be needed as it is in-situ (non invasive).

Anyway I hope you are recovering well.

  • Hi betty ... as far as l can under stand .. radiotherapy is kind of a blast to anything left as particals may remain ... so it a back up to after surgery on lots of occasions ... but if you call free phone on here or mcmillan youll be able to chat to qualified nurse who can explain a lot better then me ...

Take care ... always here ... Chrissie x
