Can you actually survive stage 4 breast cancer nowadays?

Hello

Thanks in advance for any advice or answers.

Am sorry to trouble you but am confused about what i have read and what i have been told.

I have been told by a medical team  that advanced breast cancer can be loooked at just like a chronic illness in some circumstances

And I have also read recently that advanced breast cancer has an excellent survival rate,.

But what is excellent in these circumstances? I want to be positive but also realistic.

I read tales where people are happy that either themselves, their friends or relatives made it to 5 years, which indeed is lovely.

And I know this may sound odd or maybe ungrateful but  Is this considered excellent?

I always thought with chronic illnesses you just lived a normal life span but carried on with treatment.

Has anyone ever made it to 10, 20, 30,or even 40 years?

  • You're welcome, hope all goes ok on Letrozole (I've had no side effects)

  • Hello Treehouse,

    How are you?

At the start of my journey with breast cancer, I was told "you need your lungs and liver", and I had not a very good prognosis. It was nobody's fault, and it was so very frightening, and I was in a perpetual state of panic!

That was back in July 2011.

Eight years on. And with secondaries throughout both lungs and liver I'm still here, and relatively fit at the moment. The chemo helped, and I'm on Tamoxifen. The tumours have shrunk, and I like to think that I did a lot to help myself too (but nobody knows for sure).

I shall never ever be complacent. I don't take anything for granted and my disease could progress next week, or even right now without my knowing :/

But, after being on the emergency 6 month stuff back in 2011, to being still alive and enjoying life right now, I'm really pleased to say the least!

Gosh, who knows whether I'll survive it? But something always gets us in the end doesn't it?

The way I look at it is: there are some survivors out there, and I have to try to be one of them. And I'm certain that there's more and more of us surviving for longer and longer. We are the new statistics aren't we?

So take heart, and look after yourself, because you're worth it!

    Love and hugs to you,

    Mary

Oh and P.S. ...by the way, when people used to tell me "gosh you might even have 6 years!" and they thought they were helping encourage me, it was enough to put me into a complete rage! What!?!! 6 years.... - I want 40!!

It is like being at a birthday party and being offered a crumb of cake when everyone else is expecting a whole slice! I won't be happy till I get my whole slice! Call me "Greedy Mare" if you like, but I would dearly like the whole slice and I am not apologetic for asking ;)

  • Mary,

Never mind a slice, I want the whole damned cake!

Maybe we should form a club?

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Hi Maria, I'm still here! how can I help?

  • Hello,

I know your above post is old but I wondered how you were? I'm Stage 4 breast cancer and struggle to find people who have it in as many places as I have. Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Treehouse,my useless onco send me to the grave last year.Well I am still here to her dissapointment:)I have breast cancer stage 4 first it was in my liver kidney and lungs.I am still on chemo and dont have any tumors in my liver and kidney anymore.I had a scan in April and looks I have only cancer in my lungs now but the nodules keep shrinking.I

So my plan is to outlive my "positive" oncologist.

I have stopped googling because the statistics are old anyway.

If you would like to chat I am here.By the way I was diagnosed more than 1 year ago and I am still pretty alive my colleagues saying I dont look sick at all.

  • Hello,

I am fit & well & have no obvious symptoms. Not due another scan until Oct & if clear I will have been in remission for 5 yrs.

  • Hello Mamma Cass,

just a question regarding Letrozole. Are you still free of side affects from it?? Most people appear to me to have quite negative affects. Would be good to hear for some it's not always the case!!! I note you were taking them in August 2019 and all going well.

Hoping all remains well with you.

  • Tha k you for replying. I don't/didn't have any symptoms from the liver. Only a cough and slight breathlessness plus nausea from the high calcium in the blood.

Do you think you've been just lucky? I take it your initial chemo for secondary worked? Do you have hormone treatments?
