Breast lumpectomy and node removal op

hi to anyone due to have this op

i had mine yesterday. Got there for 7:30 am. Changed into gown, dressing gown nd slippers. Had bp nd temp done met consultant, anaesthetist. Had breast marked up then radioactive injection (to help them find nodes during op- negates the need for the blue dye).

Then the wait to go. There were 4 of us for the same op so we pulled up chairs nd sat and chatted.

I went for op at 1:30. Woke up in resus then taken back to room (no bed in room just a chair)5:00pm. Bp and temp. Cup of tea nd toast. Approx hr later told could go home.

I have no pain ( I am taking 2 paracetamol 4hrly). I slept well last night. I can move arm freely etc and had no problems getting dressed or moving around.

I am waiting now for the district nurse coming to check me over. At the moment there is no bruising and very little swelling.

All the staff were brilliant I can not fault them.

If you too are to have this op I can honestly say it was no where near as bad as I had built it up in my mind. As always it is the waiting that is the worst.

Good luck to those due to have this and try not to worry

Take. Care

  • Hi ty for it post it has helped a lot I'm due to go in next week how long before you go back to work I have had mixed answers thanks x
  • I went back after two and a half weeks but only did half days for the first two weeks back.
  • No need to panic, the actual zapping is pretty straightforward.

My first three appointments were slightly longer as they were also imaging to make sure that as little lung as possible was being hit. This week I'm in and out in 15 minutes and that includes getting undressed and creaming up and dressed afterwards. Got a great bunch of radiographers, professional and caring. They've got a good sense of humour as well which helps! Bonus

  • Ah thank for the reassurance u r a star.

I feel really prepped thanks t you nd jbains.

Have u had any sickness or tiredness?

    take care

    sandra x

  • Have felt a bit gippy at times, radiographer said try having a ginger biscuit before going for treatment and it seems to work. I am getting tired, thought it was a bit early but apparently some people do get the tiredness earlier than others. Skin doing OK tho both on back and breast. Managing to get cream on both before I leave the hospital which might be helping. Disappear to the loo's on a regular basis to put either aloe vera or aveeno pn depending on how I feel!

  • That’s brill hope I’m the same.

Told my girls about the creams etc nd they brought me a pretty little basket with them all in. All with a pretty lil bow on lol.

Oh how my gifts have changed lol x

  • A paint roller is handy for getting the cream on your back!!!

  • You ladies really are amazing. Physically am up and down just as I am mentally. I just try to keep your spirits up and don't want to bring you down with my head. I'm going to see a counsellor in a month - not dealing with this whole thing well. You both have to stay strong and positive through your rad treatment. It's a lot that's happening and you need to get through it. I'm fine and will be fine. Been through a lot and am finding it tougher after treatment. I want to support you because I've been through it. I was strong on the inside and had to be that way as I wanted treatment to be successful. I had it increased half way thru and it does take awhile when they have to take the images. Glad to hear your skin is doing well - let's hope it continues. I hope the same for you Sandra. Take it easy ladies.x
  • I guess when all treatment is ended there is truly nothing to distract our minds anymore.

It shows your strength to recognise u need some help to work through some things and both surprised and delighted that you don’t have a long wait to see ur councillor.

Please don’t feel u need to be strong for us- that is not what this forum is about. It’s here to feel not alone on this road - that road does not end when we complete treatment.

If u r happy to support others that’s great but it’s not a necessity. Yours nd Rileyroos support has without a doubt made my road a lot easier than it would have been without your input - thank you

meanwhile we are here and we are listening. I am going to send both u and Rileyroo a friend request - if u prefer not t accept that is fine I won’t take offence:-) it means if anyone wants to private message rather than put on an open forum u can. It’s just gives an option. Just gotta work out how to lol .

    thinking of u jbains

    take care

  • No idea how it works but happy if anyone would prefer to chat by other means, e mail text or shock, horror an actual phone call!

  • You do actually feel like you're in a bubble yet at the same time doing something about it and moving forward. I suppose my expectations were very different as to where I'd be physically by now. I have enough to keep myself busy but a whole host of emotions about accepting it all is what I've struggled with. Bless you both and thank you for being there for me. Take it easy.
  • Hello rileyroo,

Sorry to cut in the conversation but I think I might be able to help with some instructions we have here on Cancer Chat on 'Private Messaging: How to use it' and ' How do I add a friend'.

And if you have any questions feel free to contact us. :)

    Best wishes,

  • All ok. Even made it to the gym yesterday. Keep having short bursts of tears then am ok. Rileyroo how have this weeks sessions been? How are you recovering Sandra? Sun is trying to come out here but struggling. Had my bikini out yesterday! Lol!!
  • Been very patchy this week. Was there nearly four hours today and didn't get zapped. They tried to do some mid point images and couldn't get what they needed without including part of my lung. After being writhed around for best part of two hours, had anither ct scan but that time I had had only one small glass of water and three biscuits since 6 and was feeling sick and dizzy. Had to delay the scan until I stopped shaking. Finally got away about quarter to 12. Was told to go home, rest and get some fluids on board. Treatment period extended another day. Had another set too with them over the tattoo issue as well but that will be going in the complaint letter that is going in when treatment is finished.
  • Hey u have some tears if it comes over u. It’s another safety valve giving u some release. I think I cried myself dry when I first found out. Then each time my family cried I found more tears. I started t watch sad movie during which I sobbed more than either the story or acting deserved. At the moment I feel all cried out ( I’ve started watching comedies - now I’m laughing more than crying).

I have cleaned house- 3 wks post op felt I should cos hadn’t touched it since op ( it was starting t look like Miss Havishams from great expectations lol). All dusted and clean again yeah.

Keep well and we r here for u x

  • Thanks Sandra. I've just about had enough at the moment.

  • Oh no. I knew they took more images but didn’t realise the impact this could have.

Not surprised you were shaking if u hadn’t eaten. Maybe they should have offered t let u go get some food at one the eateries these places all seem t have these days nd come back nd try rather than pushing on regardless without success.

I got my formal letter through today and it states they will remove tats via laser after if wanted so surprised yrs don’t offer the same.

Not the best of days bless. Hope u can relax a bit now u r home. Do something u fancy this weekend if u can.

    Take dare Sandra x

  • Hang in there rileyroo. This "journey" is as such- everything goes along smoothly then another hurdle will come along that one has to overcome. Just try to go with the flow. Take it really easy - your health at this point is priority number one. Is someone there with You?

Treatment is hard - they make radiation sound not that bad but the challenges are there.  In my 3rd week they decided to do that to me - poking prodding turning coz they took several xrays for a week. It's so hard to eat through it as well. Youl've come this far - one day added on the list is needed. You will het to the end - it may not feel it at this time but it'll be here before you know it. Its all working towards getting rid of those hortid cells. You will be okay - hang in there rileyroo.x

Thanks Sandra. Clean house feels great. I decided when I go back to work am gonna get a cleaner. I want to have time for me rather than in the rat race my life was.

Damn cancer - I curse it.

  • On my own for most of the weekend. First time in a long time.

  • They don't offer to take the tats off, they can't understand why I even want them taken off. Disgusting things.  I've found somewhere that offers removal as free service as part of the charitable work they do so as soon as I can after treatment is over I want them off.

  • Mine went away. I thought they may be there but they've disappeared.

    Yours might too?

You're almost at the end of treatment - hang in there. Skin still doing Ok?
