Breast lumpectomy and node removal op

hi to anyone due to have this op

i had mine yesterday. Got there for 7:30 am. Changed into gown, dressing gown nd slippers. Had bp nd temp done met consultant, anaesthetist. Had breast marked up then radioactive injection (to help them find nodes during op- negates the need for the blue dye).

Then the wait to go. There were 4 of us for the same op so we pulled up chairs nd sat and chatted.

I went for op at 1:30. Woke up in resus then taken back to room (no bed in room just a chair)5:00pm. Bp and temp. Cup of tea nd toast. Approx hr later told could go home.

I have no pain ( I am taking 2 paracetamol 4hrly). I slept well last night. I can move arm freely etc and had no problems getting dressed or moving around.

I am waiting now for the district nurse coming to check me over. At the moment there is no bruising and very little swelling.

All the staff were brilliant I can not fault them.

If you too are to have this op I can honestly say it was no where near as bad as I had built it up in my mind. As always it is the waiting that is the worst.

Good luck to those due to have this and try not to worry

Take. Care

  • Hi tealie69

good luck for next wk. Seriously not as bad as we make it in our minds.

To b honest I took early retirement so work hasn’t been an issue for me.

But... going with you have had different answers because everyone is different. It’s gonna b when you are ready (I know not particularly helpful). Physically - how quick you heal, path results, treatments you may have following your op will impact ( I don’t know any of these things myself until I have my post op meeting with the consultant which is 10 days after my op). Then It’s not always about the physical sometimes it’s where you are emotionally too.

So, bless I have been no help at all :-/

keep in touch and let us know how I get on next week.

    All the best

back t work after 2 wks what a star! Brill advice to go back on a phased return if possible.  Certainly something I would have done if I was still working.

    Take care me dear

  • Boss was adamant I had to. His sister has just got through her second bout of breast cancer so he knows what's involved better than I do.
  • Whhhaaattt!

Yr boss sounds a G*t! He thinks he has empathy with your situation cos his sister has been through it - what a load of!

Bless, not everyone has a place of work that is as supportive as it can be. I hope you didn’t  feel bullied into working and you were actually wanting to go back (some people prefer to go to work ASAP because they want to keep their minds busy and or feel the need to get back to a “normal” routine.

    Take care

  • It was him that insisted that I did the phased return. He didn't think I should have gone back when I did, he thought it was too early.

  • Going back when I did was my decision. My immediate bosses had been told to back off, neither of them have much by way of people skills so I've only dealt with the manager. Luckily or not, depending on where you stand, our top bossed wife is in treatment for breast

cancer as well so there's a fair bit of experience around at the moment.

  • Whaaaaat.... a good man lol.

I’ll get off my high horse and walk away like a cowboy:-)

  • Wouldn't quite go as far as that. He's a prat in other ways. Discretion isn't something he's very good at but it can be quite funny when he starts on about some of the people around the office.

  • Well if he steps out of order I can easily saddle on up back on my high horse for you;-)

  • I think cancer is very individualistic as is our DNA- every single person reacts differently so to expect you to have same response as others is so wrong. So many cases I read where due to tiredness and physical exertion of working, life, etc. the cancer has returned. It costs an organisation to pay out sick pay so in these times of austerity  - need I say more? I think that is unfair treatment. My post was being made junior and at first I had asked to take it as wanted to continue working - told will be fine couple of weeks after op. Let's just say my line manager's treatment of me working from home (when its never been an issue before) certainly made the decision for me to take redundancy. To be honest I really don't think anyone understands how you feel but you whether it's physically or mentally. I am outraged and feel like coming to your workplace and having a few words!!
