The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

Sandra x ️X

  • Hi pippin and a warm welcome to the thread....there are some lovely people on here  and now we have you too :-)

You have done fabulous me dear...may not feel it but... the hardest bit is under your belt. Just know how u r feeling is totally normal. Look after yourself and rest when u need. No right or wrong way to deal with the blow you have been dealt. Do what is best for u nd yrs. I know it’s hard but try to look on this “wait” time as down time from everything hosp. The cancer is out now...even I can see the light at the end of your tunnel.

letrozole... been on it a yr now. In the beginning I had 2 wks where I felt 90 and ached all over then i woke up one morning nd well u talk... it had gone and I was back to normal. Mind u I did also get really bad night sweats .... again this has dissipated but still have the odd night. I was told I might get side effects but they often clear up in the first few wks so try t work through them ....I did and they did :-) I took my meds at 9pm cos I’d read somewhere it helped- don’t know if it did but still take them late. Everyone is different and some needed to change to another medication so play it by ear and know u have options.

radiotherapy......start slapping that moisturiser on now in prep. Others will hopefully drop by nd tell u their regime...mine I used aveeno in the lead up to RT then my hosp supplied QV cream ( not all hosps do this)...post RT I finished off the QV cream then went back to the aveeno ( your skin will continue to “cook” for a couple of wks post RT). My skin was fine it got a tanned look to it .....remember everyone is different.

so.... good luck for Tuesday. Do things u like or fancy till then. Ask away anything u need ..... lots of been there done thats or I too am at that point to chip in and help.

U are not alone we are here if u want or need us.....or to just shoot the breeze  :-)

    take care lass x

  • Hi Sandra

Thank you for your warm welcome and all the encouragement and for sharing your experiences with it all x

I dont feel quite so alone now, it’s weird that everything else goes on as normal but my life is suddenly taking a different unexpected route. Getting used to this new way of life a little bit but it’s hard to not ‘do’ especially when you are a ‘doer’ but I expect it will come back in time....hope so!

Thats very reassuring for me that you said the hardest part is under my belt, I didn’t think of it like that and will jolly along to the hospital this afternoon with that thought :) thank you x

The good......sunny day and goldfinches galore in the garden!

the bad...... tummy wobble about hospital this afternoon and scary thoughts of them poking the sore bits

  • Hope you enjoyed yr family day.... my fave type of day :-) ️X

  • Sundial I think I have repetitive strain from my knitting lol.

When I flex my hand I get a sharp pain nd tingling in my ring finger :-(

not suprised really cos been knitting for England lol. Usually I make my own patterns up but did a jumper where I actually followed a pattern..... I knew it wasn’t gonna look right but finished nd stitched it up anyway nd yup what a plight lol. So unpicked neck and added rows to lift neckline. Unpicked and pulled out both sleeves... then knit back up to my own pattern....stitched it all back up and yes it looks brill. This prob did not help the rsi.

No knitting for the last 3 days nd hand def feels on the mend. Long may your strong tendons reign ;-) x

  • Evening peeps

good :- I lovvvve a bargain called into garden centre ( they do fabulous Xmas displays) everything in sale. Oh my.... got £40 worth for £7 .... get in :-)

got a bit of repetitive strain ( due to going a bit manic with my knitting vibe). So....channeling my creativity. For 1st time ever I’m gonna have a shot at an Easter tree. Gonna use my Xmas twig tree. Need some decs for it so I’m all over Pinterest for ideas. Plenty of time for me to have a go at making.....erm..... stuff !?!

    hope it’s been a goodin peeps x

  • Hi Sandra

i get a pain in my left elbow if I knit too much. Sometimes lasts for weeks then just goes away. Also right middle finger bends and won’t straighten. Tendon problems to do with my diabetes but I plod on. I tend to adapt patterns for my knits!  Long may we continue,

  • Hi Sandra, hoping things are improving with my husband so that is a weight off.

I got a phone call about 10 days ago from the hospital saying I was going to get an appointment with the oncologist to discuss additional treatment. They were going to cancel my appointment this Tuesday but I asked them not to so now they will generate the app with the oncologist after Tuesday so things are moving again. Unfortunately it seems Christmas got in the way!

  • Hi dragonfly ,

wondering if when u had your 1st appointment with the oncologist if different treatments were tabled then?

So glad hubby is on the mend.... enough to fill your time without worrying about your loved ones.

How you been today...at least not too long till Tuesday when you can ask for the heads up.

waiting .......as you will already know is the worst. Thinking of u x

    Sundial

  • Hi ladies.

Sorry really been off the radar trying to get my head round life. I don't think I've ever felt so crap! If I could understand why it would make it easier bit I've got not idea. I can't change anything I know so just srgijkng with myself whether to order an Indian xx

  • Oh Dizzle hope you had the Indian! Keep posting so we know you are okay x

Feeling pretty **** myself. Hubby is in masses of pain with slipped disc and the medication has given him severe constipation. He spends most of the day in bed which means I will be going on my own to see the consultant on Tuesday.

Sandra I have not seen the oncologist yet. I am seeing the consultant first then they will make an appointment with the oncologist.

  • Hello friends,  oh my gosh I have been following all your threats just been really busy with work. I’m a real estate agent and market it’s kind of slow right now and I have a mortgage to pay and lots of bills so I’ve been working a lot but I’ve been following your threats I just haven’t had time to write, but tonight I’m a little sad ,  and I’m really crying while I write this.Today was my birthday and as always I had my brother and kiss but never at home in my daughters and my grandkids the whole family I cook for everybody like I do every year try to make everything perfect, well ,Am I overreacting by feeling sad because none of my three daughters took the time to buy me a gift? All three of them came with an excuse of how busy they were or I’m sorry mom I didn’t have time Or oh mom I owe you the gift.  It is not a gift it’s self which makes me mad or sad is that nobody took the time to see how many get something for my mom? Everything was more important than me. That shows me that you give everything to your kitchen then when they’re older they don’t care. I’m just sad because I live alone I don’t have anybody at home I work a lot I’m alone a lot .  I don’t have a significant other I’m just sad, sad .  I’m sorry ladies I’m crying I don’t have anybody to talk to about this .  I’m just grateful I’m doing well I am free of cancer thank God so I guess they take me for granted like come find him all self-sufficient and I don’t need anything . Tell me ladies if I’m overreacting?

  • Hi,

No you are not overreacting but I also do not mean your girls don’t care. They came to see you and gave you their time and these days that is the most precious thing. They just don’t realise that a bunch of flowers from the local garage would have been enough.

They see you as strong which is good because you are. You have beaten cancer.

Maybe the next time you see them just casually say that you were a little hurt that they did not get you anything and that a bunch of flowers would have been enough. Don’t make a big deal of it. And now just think about the times they are there for you.

Hope you feel better soon xx

  • Hi ladies,

Indian still on the side lol. Had a bit of a meltdown last night. Cried myself to sleep. Need to pull myself together. Woke up to horrible news. When I was diagnosed my friend in Newquay put me in touch with her friend who had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. We started chemo at the same time and chatted all through it. She got the all clear in October. It's her funeral today. It came back and spread. I'm actually in shock. She only turned 25 six weeks ago. Why does life have to be so cruel. I almost feel guilty my treatment went so well :-(

  • So good to hear from you Dizzle.

So sorry to hear about your friend, it is very upsetting I know but lung cancer is a whole different ball game. You will feel guilty but it is not justified. I am sure she would not want you to.

I know it won’t feel like it now but it will get better. You will still have meltdowns and you will still feel sad but every day you will feel stronger.

Do you chat with anyone apart from us? Sometimes it is good to touch base with normality. I belong to another forum where we talk about everything and that helps to ground me. It is not just about cancer.

  • Lol sounds like helping u with knitting would kick my repetitive strain off lol ;-)

Ah the student becomes the teacher :-) love that life is on the up for u WQ - new job nd doing all things you fancy in your u time.,,, perfect ️X

  • Hello there wor Dizzel :-)

let it all out lass you will actually feel better in the long run for it.

So sorry to hear about your young friend...... it’s sometimes  hard to comprehend some of the things others are/have gone through. Why we gotta take every day and wring out every moment of life out of it.

Deep breaths lass we are here x
