The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • Thanks Sandra 123,

Glad you enjoyed it. Just for a laugh, here is the transcript of my chat with the apple chat support. It rather made me smile too and certainly fixed my problem. Apologies to anybody who lives in Luton, I'm sure there are lovely parts to it if you know where you are going.

    Steve

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. My name is Steve. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

    Gadgetgal

Do you wnt me to tell you wht is wrong?

    Steve

I am seeing that you’re having troubles with some keys on your keyboard, is that right?

    Gadgetgal

yes, the key next to S - to the left :)

It just strted tonight. it just seem stuck nd doesn't move down like the other keys

    Steve

    Alright, so the “A” key?

    Gadgetgal

    Yup

I cn mke it type if i press relly hrd thus A

    Steve

Okay, I would be more then happy to help ou t

In this case I would suggest running backup of your data, through time machine. That way we can get you in for service and get the keyboard looked at right away !

    Gadgetgal

I pAY FOR cloud storage so havent used time machine for a while. Will that be OK? Otherwise I can boot up my old time machine as wellaaaaassaaaa

    Gadgetgal

HEy, it seems to be clicking ok again

    Gadgetgal

    aaaaaa

    Gadgetga;

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    Steve

It would be recommended to ensure the Time machine backup is up to date.

I would still bring the Mac in to get the keyboard inspected

    Gadgetgal

Yes, I have looked on the web and spotted that there is a problem. Thank goodness it's righted itself just now. How to I get an apptment at Milton Keynes?

    Steve

    I can look at availability

    Gadgetgal

I tried earlier but it seemed to think I wanted an appt tomorrow and said there were none available

    Steve

At this location they seem to be booked, we can however look at Stormfront for tomorrow around noon if you wanted?

    Gadgetgal

    Stormfront?

    Steve

Yeah, they are booked for the following 7 days it seems

And yeah, stormfront is located in Luton

    Gadgetgal

I'd be happy to take it in to Milton Keynes on Friday week. Luton is a dive where they might steal my wheels

    Steve

In that case it would be best to have you chat us back in a few days when we are able to see more availability at the Apple, Milton Keynes location.

    Gadgetgal

Aha, can you only book 7 days in advance?

    Steve

    Yes

    Gadgetgal

Right, many thanks. I'll be back in touch on Friday and see what the availability is. Seriously, don't suggest people go to Luton with an expensive machine. It is a scary place. I went to the cinema there once in 2011 and never returned.

    Steve

I am only suggesting to visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider who is located there, as I have never been there myself I can only take your word for it aha.

    Steve

If I ever find myself over there I will be sure to remember this ! Thanks for the heads up aha.

    Gadgetgal

Many thanks for your help Steve. At least by hammering my A it started working again. I'll try to get it into the Milton Keynes store before it gives up again.

    Steve

It’s been a pleasure helping out and I wish you the best getting an appointment booked.

  • Hi Sandr a, Thanks for thinking about me. I always look and follow everyone posts. I have been busy at work. I have closed 2 transactions in the past months, which is great! I can't complain, $$$ for Christmas, jejeje. But I haven't posted any updates.

I went to my Oncologist appointment about 2 weeks ago, and she declared me cancer free!! yey. but I thought that was not until like a year has past or more. What are your thoughts girls? And I also had my every 3-month appointment with my surgeon (which I love, he is great!!) and he said ,we should follow you closely ,so next appt. in February he will order follow up tests.i think he is better than my Onco because she (my Onco) told me mammogram once a year, and I asked why? because I thought if you had cancer they should do it like every 6 months. No? well , she said my cancer was stage 1 A  and Bla ,Bla Bla...  I think since she is young and maybe not so experienced she is only following Insurance guidelines. So I know where to go for my follow up tests, My surgeon.

He also remembers that I have 3 daughters and insisted on having my girls get mammograms. HE CARES!! And I love him for that.

I'm on Arimidex and I have to say that I have not experienced any side effects, no weight gain either. I only notice that I bruise very easily. I don't know if it's from the Arimidex or my RA meds. All my blood work is normal, my tumor markers all normal, yey!!

I still feel a little exausted but I believe its getting a little better an I'm happy about that because it gives me the chance to do more things.

I had a great weekend, and I wanted to share with you guys. It was my brother's 50th birthday and he threw a big party with DJ, a cheff in the kitchen, bartender and all!! he had a 70's theme so it was soo fun. I was soo happy to be able to be there.

My brother on the left and his husband on the right.

Also Sunday it was my grandson 18th birthday. so an all-party weekend. so today I'm exausted but so happy.

well here are my news my friends .im sending everyone a big hug. How is everyone spending Christmas?

It will be nice if we could all share what special tradition we all have?

    Hugs, hughs, hughs!!

  • LOL gadgetgal, I agree about Luton! We had our car stolen when we lived near MK and it turned up (smashed up) in...yes, Luton.

  • Ha ha ha cracking that  :-)

went t cinema in 2011 nd never returned.... presumably t Luton nd not home heh heh heh ️

  • Ah brilliant news lilianna nd look at u ....looking good mrs.

I have annual mammograms nd currently see my surgeon 6 monthly ( I think this is more a medication check). I have 2 daughters but because I am the 1st in the family t have breast cancer ( any cancer actually) I have been told my girls don’t need checking.

All the family used t come to mine for Xmas dinner but now because of the lil ones nd not wanting to take them away from their toys...we all go to my daughters. We all pull together to buy the food and cook it. So Xmas day when lil ones wake they get their stockings t open in bed nd daughter rings us t come nd watch them open their presents. We let ourselves in the house switch on the tree lights then ring daughter t say ready for girls t come downstairs ️ Love it very magical x

  • I pondered over the phrase "cancer free". My surgeon told me you don't require anymore treatment so what is tamoxifen and why am I taking it if "cancer free"? To me that doesn't make sense. He said we don't give any guarantee of being free of cancer forever. So am I a ticking bomb waiting for it at some point in my life? And I said coz I want to go out with a bang!!!! Ha ha ha! Sorry - my silly sense of humour.

But I just don't get what's right & what's wrong. Do I say I have cancer or I had cancer? Tamoxifen and other drugs are termed "adjuvant therapy" so is that treatment or What? It's too confusing. The consultants are so blasè about it all as they've not been thru it and it's a job. So I say nothing and just say I'm tired. Think I'm questioning too much.

Yes the annual mammos are harder after being diagnosed. And it hurts so much more on operated on breast. Think i should secretly swig something before it to get thru it. Imagine that? Having a mammo being drunk!!! Sorry - my silly humour again. Think I've had too much wine tonight.....

  • Hi Sandra,

Yes, AXA is a medical company that assess new starters for certain jobs (I'm Air Traffic so the medical standard in vision/hearing etc. is obviously high), and can also be used for people that get sick.  In both cases they can advise the employer of changes they may need to make for the employee.  Obviously if my eyesight was poor and couldn't be corrected by glasses they couldn't employ me.

In my case I think they expect to be telling the employer, at the very least, that my sickness will likely be higher in the coming years as I need to be more careful when I do catch anything, but I can't think of any physical alterations they would need to make.  So they would have to adjust their attendance criteria for me etc.  But our shift patterns are quite good which should help with getting rest, certainly compared to where I did shift work before.

Got radiotherapy next year, presumably very early on next year, so will have to go across to Southampton for 3 weeks for that.  Am getting my seroma drained weekly at the moment so hope it settles down soon.  Think I've developed cellulitis in it as I'm getting a fever and shivers so will get that checked out tomorrow.  Got prophylactic mastectomy for my right breast, probably next year, although they may opt to take my ovaries and fallopian tubes first to decrease oestrogen production overall.  Maybe more chemo too, don't know on that one yet :-D

Do love your knitting, great design.  I haven't knitted in a long time although technically I can, but I'd have to practice a lot to get to your standard!

  • That made me giggle GadgetGal :D

    Poor Luton though!

  • Hi Sandra,

My mum was told the same, and it was entirely wrong.  However, in our case my mum's family is completely male so there was no way of proving history (obviously if any of the men had suffered breast cancer they would have suspected genetic, but the men not having doesn't rule out genetic causes either!)

My mum was 39 though when hers first appeared and having it at an earlier age does increase the chance of it being genetic.  Even when my mum got it a second time they still refused to test her.  When I then got diagnosed in June (at 41 and I've had it since probably around 37/38) I pushed heavily for genetic testing as my gut had always been that it was genetic.  It came back that I was right.

That's not to needlessly worry you, but if you are a particularly young age for having it AND don't have women in the family beyond your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother etc. you may want to push for testing just for your peace of mind.  In our case my mum's siblings were all male, she had blood uncles but no blood aunts etc. and going further back we don't know what people died of.  My maternal gran and grampa's first cousins were even all male except one (grampa had a female cousin).  That female cousin had suffered from breast cancer, so in reality 2/3 of the women we knew of had suffered from breast cancer and one of them at a very young age.  Still they didn't test!  I know our situation is probably quite uncommon with the family being so male, but there will be others out there like that so thought I'd mention it just in case :)
