The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • Hi Sandra

Yes it definitely is back to reality with s jolt!  Everything ok though.. Having a bit of trouble with swollen ankles. Went to gp because I thought it was due to new blood pressure tablets. Hoping it wasn’t lymphodema. He said not tablets, ignored lymphodema risk, took blood pressure and said it was high. Well I’ve bern checking it and I didn’t think so, However I now have to monitor at home ( thought I was doing that). Have to see nurse this afternoon so she can show me how to fill in the form ( Joke).  Not ideal but go with the flow...

Treatment follow up appt on Tuesday so I will discuss the ankles and possibility of lymphodema with them, Compared to lots of others this is just a small irritation but annoying none the less. I have had fantastic treatment from both my gynaecologist and oncologist but my gp experiences over the last seven months are not on the same level. :-(

Hope everything goes well for those undergoing tests and treatments today,

Hope everyone can find something good in their day.

  • Suprised it’s not the bp tablets... mine started swelling when I first started taking mine but seems to have settled down. The more I walk the more chance of them swelling. Thought it was a known side effect of no tablets.

Hope all goes as expected on Tuesday x

  • Thank you Sandra.

And yes it says swollen feet, hands or ankles are a serious side effect of the tablets I’m taking. I guess my gp knows better. I went to see the practice nurse and she says my bp is fine. Still got to take it two tines a day for a week because the doctor says so, ( I’ve been doing that anyway). Then I have to take the form in so another nurse can average the readings out and advise what I need to do next.

ive just lost all faith in my gp but it’s so difficult to change surgeries. I’ve looked into it. So many other people are not happy with their gp either. At our surgery there are so many rules....eight minute appts for one problem only...emergency appts of only five minutes and they stick rigidly to those times, what happened to the concept of a family doctor who knows their patients, I went to see them after i had been diagnosed and had seen the specialist nurse who told me to go to get a variety of meds including skin cream and tablets to line my stomach because of the extra meds I would be taking. The gp told me first of all they don’t prescribe on the say so of a nurse and that I was to choose the one I though most important to discuss as they dealt with only one problem per visit, if I wanted to discuss others I needed to make more appts, I know we are lucky to have the nhs but I thought the idea was to help people stay well.. Rant over.

  • Hi everyone.....a very sheepish Cornish here....yes the one that's been very neglectful of you wonderful ladies. Sorry I have not been on here atall for a biy. I needed a break and it has helped as I've actually had days of not having the c word in my mind at all.

I can see that lots has moved on.....dizzle has a new boob, new members, swollen feet, and issues with treatments. Plus lots of wallpaper scraping, climbing and caving.....oh and a holiday or two going on.....wowzers I'm exhausted lol.

    Hi Sundial,

My GP advised me to make a double booking every time. I have been doing this for years now. Do you think your GP might wear this? If not, it certainly sounds like time to change your GP. I had to do this previously and have never regretted it.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

There are two ways to book appts at our surgery. At the actual surgery which I don’t do often because we live a distance away or online. When you book online there is only ever one appt per day shown for that week. There is no booking by phone unless it’s an emergency and they are five minute appts. Often if you need a follow up appt the next week they cannot book one because the diary hasn’t been set.  Our practice is part of a group practice and different doctors are sent each week so it can’t always be guaranteed that you’ll even see the same doctor. It’s pretty much pot luck! Plus they are not open Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons. About three years ago my doctor sold up and it was taken over by this group practice and it has just gone downhill since then. I’m looking into changing surgery.

  • Hi sundial...doesn’t sound at all satisfactory. T change practice just go to the practice of yr choice an ask for a registration form.... fill it in while u are there ( it’s not a big form... best t have nhs number with u if possible - it’s easier do r the practice to find u on the nhs spine to get yr records electronically) you should b able to make an appointment straight away. The practice will register u online and will receive your records electronically pretty much straight away so the gp will b able to read your meds and records from yr prev gp.

Mind u every practice works their appointment booking systems how they choose so ask how theirs works. Jolamine advised exactly what I would ... double appt :-) x

  • Well hello wor cornishpastie :-)
