The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • Oh dear - there's always some curveball there waiting for us. You'll get thru it - keep going.

Enjoy that holiday - perhaps you can get a grant for your holiday? I know Macmillan does it here but you have to be earning peanuts to be eligible. I used staysure insurance - it covered me up to $10million. There are different packages but don't know if it's just for UK residents. You'll have to check that.

Feel very sad - very good friend of ours lost his battle. This earth has definitely suffered a loss as he was a remarkable person.

All you ladies who are having a bit of a tough time - you got this! We're all there with you giving you strength. Take it easy.x

  • Hey ladies.

Liliana you've done brilliant. Congrats for reaching the end. I'm on hormone therapy and started it in May. I'm still getting hot flushes, short tempered etc. However, it's a small price for the benefits.

Sundial...i used Allclear travel insurance. They were quite reasonable. I paid £75 for our insurance to Turkey.

  • Thanks everyone for your help with insurance. I will look into them all, I’m still fighting my insurer because as I see it, it was their error and I wouldn’t have booked the holiday but for the answer I got from them the day before. It’s a mess. I spoke.to someone else at the insurer tonight who had a bit of common sense. He read aloud through the notes that had been made and most of it was wrong so he started again and got dates and what the doctors had told me. I got. The impression that they thought I’d had two different bouts of cancer and the brachytherapy was to cure the second. I told him that I was clear after the hysterectomy and had had 92 lymph nodes removed which were all clear. The brachytherapy was to stop it coming back not to get rid of it. It’s gone back to  the underwriters but I don’t think they’ll relent. :-(

  • Thank you cornishpastie, I'm happy this part at least is almost over. Now to the HT, Leets see how I do. I hope I don't get too many side effects because I already deal with my RA. I have been very tired and had no time to rest with work, (I'm a real estate agent) and I also have an Airbnb, I separated my master room and turned it into a single with a kitchenette and I have been doing extremely well ,but between each guest lots of cleanup up goes on as that is the key to being successful at it. People look at the reviews and most of mine mention how clean it is. But I guess it keeps me active and helps me pay some of my bills, but I,m not getting any younger and at 63 I get tired way faster than some years ago. But on the other hand it keeps me active. But I'm way overdue for a long vacation!!

Are the hot flushes supposed to get better with time? So I didn't know about the short-tempered side effect... MMM my girls are not going to like that lololol . How is your family coping with that? are they understanding?

  • I’m a year into taking Tamoxifen and still get the hot flushes, also get quite bad mood swings.  I mentioned this to the Onc last time I saw him and he suggested taking mild anti depressants which apparently help. I’m not going there and said so as as I don’t want a different set of side effects and there probably would be some. He said it would be better for me if I could just tough it out.

  • I'm 19 months taking tamoxifen and hadn't gone thru menopause so it's pushing me thru. Hot flushes are settling slightly, started getting periods last 3 months even tho they'd stopped and mood swings galore! Aches and pains have worsened. I've been trying to look into what I'm eating to help mood swings - how pancreas is working and foods affecting hormones and insulin. It's complicated. I gave up so if I'm a moody cow so be it. Arthritis in right knee has presented itself but make sure I walk every day (Try to do interval type walking - really fast bursts) and eat healthily. That my fitness pal app keeps telling me I'm not eating enough so gave up on that.

I think everyone reacts differently as our bodies are all different so find what works for you. A bit of trial and error but we get there in the end.

Enjoy your day ladies as best you can. You got this!

  • Morning all

Jbains My fitness Pal tells you that you are not eating enough because you will go into starvation mode and that causes your body to store fat. That's what happened to my mum. She hardly ate anything then couldn’t understand why she put on weight. When she went on a controlled diet and ate more the weight dropped off. But you know you’re own body.

    Good

Sun shining, pool finished, new raised beds arrived and new garden table and chairs arriving today. All courtesy of my lovely brother who sadly passed away from untreated bowel cancer last October.

    Bad

I'm still fuming about travel insurance!

  • The bad, it’s raining and York is still busy!

The good, my prosthetic arrived yesterday and after a mix up with the free bra, I decided to go to York to get a post surgery bra (or in my case, a long way post surgery). Success! The lady who fitted me for it is going thro breast cancer for the second time so she absolutely gets how good nice underwear that fits properly makes you feel so much better!
