The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • Lovely to see you back Cornish sending you a big hug x

  • Glad you're back Cornish! Good on you for recognising it and whipping it into shape! Great idea changing diet and eating healthily. Thank God I didn't put weight on with tamoxifen. I read so many blogs both here and in America where 90% put weight on - almost 30 lbs! I started at the gym with a healthy diet and lost 10 inches on my waist. Don't go gym since i started work but walk alot.

But everyone has just gotta love us all as we are. Do what suits your body. Mental and physical health goes hand in hand. I've had many episodes of the negativity and come out of it.

Keep going ladies as we all rock! It's all good with a few bumps along the way. I don't have to be back at work until tues now. Get to enjoy family time.

    The doggies are gorjus!

  • Hi Cornish,

A few years ago I decided I was determined to lose weight. Always been difficult. I’m not a usual type 1 diabetics, skinny and struggling to keep weight on. The exact opposite in fact., I've always eaten lots of fruit and veg and salads etc but I’ve only got to look at a slice of bread or a potato or spoonful of pasta and I can feel the pounds piling on. I’d tried every diet under the sun including under a hospital dietician. At one point when my kids were little, a young and so he thought great doctor put me on 500 calories a day. Well at the end of the year I had lost 5 pounds and couldn’t lift my two year old up to give her a cuddle. I gave that one up......Nothing worked. Then my son lost  8 stone using my fitness pal which counts calories but all other food ingredients like salt, sugar etc, so I thought I’d give it a go, I lost four stone in a year and I didn’t not eat anything I wanted to, even costa latte each day.  Just as long as it fell within the calorie etc count. It was really easy to use because you can use the app on your smart phone to scan products at the supermarket or search for specific foods at home. My diabetes has been controlled better than its ever been because I can track carbs and sugars as well. I’m afraid I’ve put a bit back on over the last few months but once treatment is over I shall go back on to it, lose some weight then go on a maintenance plan.

  • Yes jbains the tamoxifen has caused me to go up 2 dress sizes (was already seriously overweight)!

I'm definately doing it for me and my health. Other half is doing it with me and told me today that my face looks a little thinner....think he was just giving me little motivational compliments lol as too soon to see any difference anywhere.

Sundial I am going to look into that app as it sounds really handy. Thank you. And 4 stone lost in a year....well done hun. And your son losing 8st....amazing!

    Inspirational.

  • Thank you Cornish. That’s kind of you to say. My self confidence is rock bottom at the moment so that made me smile. And I second sundial on my fitness pal......it’s a god send when calorie counting. I always use it when I’m looking to lose weight. I’ve put on a stone since I started treatment so will definitely going back to the app to lose it! X

  • Dizzle to get to look that lovely while going through what you are is a blessing. Beauty comes from within and radiates out....and you have shown what a beautiful person you are by thinking about others and raising money for charity in your brave the shave.

Beachbabe, thank you for the welcome back. Hope you are good after your holibobs!

Sundial I've just downloaded the app and it suggests 1400 calories a day at the moment. I put in what I've had today and I'm under by 300! I couldn't eat anything else though lol...am stuffed.

  • Hi everyone

    the bad

i got my results back today I have a 35mm tumour but am not sure what stage as they didn’t say and I didn’t ask, not sure I want to know to be honest.  Chemo will start in a couple of weeks 6 rounds every three weeks and I’m having my tag tomorrow then surgery will follow.

    The good

Luckily its not spread anywhere else

  • I found that too. I think it help that an outside authority so to speak is backing your eating habits. You can only try it and see how you go. That doesn’t seem to be many calories. I think I started on more than that. In fact I have more than that now. Might be worth a check. It also tells you if you’ve not eaten enough calories, ie 1000 because you then go into starvation mode and store fat. I have a Fitbit as well and they can sync together so when you do exercise it automatically ups your calories. I used to find even then I struggled to eat more than the base number of calories but boy did I feel good that I’d burnt those extra calories and not replaced them. :-)

  • Good news Rach42 that it’s not spread anywhere. Just let the chemo do it’s thing. Im 4 rounds into my 6 rounds of chemo so he end is in sight. It’s not been so bad compared to some people. Got my op in October then radiotherapy. Is this the case with you? I’m sure you will sail through it. Being positive about it all really helps I’ve found :-) x

  • Thanks Dizzle, yes that sounds the same, I’m really trying to be positive but can’t help being a little scared.  I don’t like needles so they have mentioned having a tube fitted but I’m not sure what’s worse so will see?  Do you mind me asking if you lost your hair?  It seems a small thing but my little girl will definitely notice and I don’t want her to know as she’s a worrier, they did mention a cold cap so might try that?  They have given me a 50/50 on the chemo working if it doesn’t then it will be a mastectomy, are you the same? X
