The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • It’s the quiet problems that cost the most as we well know.

  • Whattt! How can anywhere in yr home look mucky after all the cleaning/decorating u have done. Have u just woke up from a nightmare cos it just can’t b real :-) x

  • Dog fur!!! We’ve had all the furniture from the diner in the living room for a week so not been able to get the vac round! Could have stuffed a pillow with the amount of fur I cleaned up!

  • Lol,

ah so just a hoover nd dust needed. Better than when I decorate I stand in doorway looking at pristine room just finished.... turn around and the entire rest of house is heap lie on. Just look at the pristine room till yr ready t Hoover nd dust lol.

*daughter puts the dog hair she gets (from brushing dog) in the mesh bird feeder- birds take to line nests.....doesn’t help much with the actual hoovering tho lol x

  • Lol yes you had a real result there Sandra lol

  • Ok , Surgery is Schedule for the 28th. As you all mentioned I have to be there at 6 AM, however My surgery is not scheduled until 12:30 PM and that’s because they have to do all the bloodwork chest x-ray EKG and also inject the dye for the lymph nodes . OMG! I have weird feelings I don’t know if it’s normal but I am scared but at the same time I’m kind of relieved that at least the surgery is going to be over.  I am eating very healthy but I would like any advice you guys can give me as to how to prepare so I can feel better and Make my heart stronger. I’m a little bit scary I have rheumatoid Arthritis  so I’m always scared of anesthesia or heart problems during surgeries.

I thought I needed to see the surgeon before surgery but they told me that no I don’t need to go see him I will meet him at the hospital . ??

Please any advice since you guys have been gone through this already it will be greatly appreciated

    Tank you

  • Morning Liliana

brill news not too long a wait till yr op now.

Most of what u mentioned I had as a pre op a wk before my op ( ecg, bloods etc). On the day I met my anaesthetist, was marked up for op -they drew on my boob (wrote not the other one  lol) surgeon popped by ( just asked how I was... didn’t do anything). BP checked, for me no wire put in because I had iodine seeds put in a wk earlier which negates the need for the wire. I did have a radio active injection to help them find the nodes this was instead of the blue dye. Didn’t have a bed - 4 of us all having same op - we all had a comfy chair. The rest was just waiting around. I took my kindle but never used it cos the 4 of us in the room pulled up our chairs and chatted (u could almost feel our anxiety lift as we laughed nd chatted). One by one we were taken for our op and one by one we saw each other come back. This helped too cos as each came back we could see they were awake, bright and talking- telling us they felt really ok... and they were smiling. I was 3rd down... walked down to theatre... had op...trolly back to room nd my chair. I was same as the others bright,  happy and talking. The time from leaving my chair to being back in it was 3.5 hrs .., no idea how much of this was actual op. I took 2 paracetamol when I went t bed that night at home. I did not need any more paracetamol because I had no pain ... didn’t want t b bumped  but no pain. Next morning DIstrict Nurse popped by... she looked at my dressing...left more dressings nd said i only had to use them if  the one I had on looked marked by leakage... I didn’t need them - I had the same dressing on for 7 days then as advised took all dressings off myself. When the district nurse left my daughter nd I went for a wander around the shops then to the pub for lunch. In short I was fine. My arm had full free movement but I still did my exercises. 2 nd day while at shops I bumped into one of the 4 lovely ladies who had their op with me. She too was happily dotting around the shops nd feeling fine.

This is my experience... the processes can vary from hosp t hosp in this country so not surprised it sounds like it might b diff in the states too.

I have said it before the op in reality was much less of a deal than I had made it out to b in my head. Worst part - I normally sleep on my stomach nd needed t sleep on my back :-) then couple of days later I woke up on my stomach ( must have turned over in my sleep) once again all was well lol.

what did I do to prep for op...enjoyed myself. I went out for meals, afternoon tea at a fancy hall,  long walks with family, spent time with grandchildren, shopping nd all things “treats”.

It is natural u are anxious. Try to spend the run up to yr op as free time from all things hospital. Treat yourself. Embrace family time. I was told to try nd not loose weight in lead up to op.... I also embraced this advice lol.

Good luck me dear ... hope all goes as good as it can x

  • Hi all

    Good

Made decision to go for lymph node op, sorted with surgeon today and will be in about three weeks time. Got more meds for infection but he said he wasn’t concerned about it and he would go in above it next time.

    Bad

Had to take paper to gp from surgeon to get script for meds. I was told as it was after 11, it wouldn’t be ready until Monday. I kicked off royally. They’re trying to sort it. I’m not holding my breath.

Have as good a day as you can.
