The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • Morning liliana

This is a copy paste from what I posted the day after my op for lumpectomy and 2 nodes.

I got there for 7:30 am. Changed into gown, dressing gown nd slippers. Had bp nd temp done met consultant, anaesthetist. Had breast marked up then radioactive injection (to help them find nodes during op- negates the need for the blue dye).

Then the wait to go. There were 4 of us for the same op so we pulled up chairs nd sat and chatted.

I went for op at 1:30. Woke up in recovery then taken back to room (no bed in room just a chair)5:00pm. Bp and temp. Cup of tea nd toast. Approx hr later told could go home.

I have no pain ( I have taken  2 paracetamol ). I slept well last night. I can move arm freely etc and had no problems getting dressed or moving around.

I am waiting now for the district nurse coming to check me over. At the moment there is no bruising and very little swelling.

All the staff were brilliant I can not fault them.

If you too are to have this op I can honestly say it was no where near as bad as I had built it up in my mind. As always it is the waiting that is the worst.

Just want to say Liliana, I was asked if I had someone staying with me For the night when they said I could go home ( I was a day case) - I did my daughter stayed ( I live alone normally). I  don’t know what they would have said if I didn’t. I would see if u can get someone t stay and/ or ask what happens if u don’t. Tbh I didn’t need anyone but it was comforting t know they were there if I did. She only stayed 1 night. X

  • Ah brill sundial

As we say around here shy bairns  get nowt. Basically if u don’t ask u def won’t get. Fingers crossed for u x

  • If you include the bit in the anaesthetic room and recovery then yes but actual surgery is around an hour depending on whether your nodes are being checked.

  • Like the ladies have said waiting to go down is the worse. Normal tests done then check paperwork doctor came round checked the main lump ( I had 2) drew where to cut. Was in some pain when I woke up but had some tablets and went. Was home that evening I live with my 15 year old son so my mum came and stayed with me just for that night. I had 3 weeks off work as I do heavy lifting was going to have 2 weeks but because had to go deeper for second lump was given 3.  Was bruised and felt more achey than painful. I am 6 weeks post op and yeah I have probably been over doing things a bit as the outside is fine but it takes longer to repair inside so can still be a bit achey. As advised on here I got some sports bras best thing I did! Still wearing them now specially for work x

  • Hi liliana. It's perfectly normal to be a little nervous- I was at first as have never had an op in my life but it will be fine. We all react differently.  The hanging about before is the worst bit.

My day was 9:30am injection for dye, 11;30am speak with surgeon, 12:30 mammo and insertion of wire. My op was meant to be at 1:30 but there wasn't a bed available yet. So I met my anaesthetist at 2:30pm and got my bed by 3pm. Was wheeled in at 3:45pm and back in ward at 7:45pm. Everyone's case is different - it's all hopefully standard stuff. I am one of those that didn't react too well to anaesthetic so was given anti sickness med as it was 9:30pm & just wanted to go home. Once I'd managed a bit of tea and half biscuit and gone to toilet was home. I could move my arm next day - I started my exercises well before op. It waz a bit sore and was not alone. Its advisable to have someone there just in case you react badly within 24-48 hrs after op.

It'll be fine as I just kept telling myself it's all good and one step closer to getting this bas**** cancer outta me! Hope it goes well for you and take it easy.

  • Morning all

Lilianahomes - Waiting for op is the worst but then everything goes quickly after that and it seems no time that you’re awake. Hope everything goes well.

    Good

Out for lunch today. Going to treat myself to a new garden bench ifI see one I like. The sun is shining. My ankle is not as swollen. I can raise a smile. Hopefully issues soon will be sorted.

    Bad

    Usual.

    Sundial

  • Hi ladies - it's my day at home so plan on just chilling. Hope you're all having a good morning.

It's cloudy here and am still relaxing in bed. Bliss! This week so far has been pretty good - not as exhausted as I normally am. Think its the new diet. I've cut out wheat, gluten and dairy and have it only once every 5 days. It's my 2nd week on it and has made me feel better and lose a bit more weight so I look absolutely sexy for holiday!

Enjoy your day ladies and keep well.

  • One question,my surgeon said to get some sports bras . But they have to be tight??? I read somewhere on this site that they have to be cotton and soft . So I don’t know what to get . Anyone can help me out on this?

    Thank you

    Liliana

  • I got cotton ones from a local supermarket. They need to fit comfortably but maybe not quite as firmly as a normal sports bra.

If you’re struggling I can probably get you some, they come in packs of two, one black one white.
