Coping with chemotherapy

i was diagnosed in June 2017 with T3 adenocarcinoma in my right breast. Presently I am undergoing chemotherapy, onto my 2nd cycle of treatment. The whole oncology team at my local hospital have been amazing. They have filled me with hope that I do have a future and there is treatment available even for those with advanced cancer, so never give up and keep strong. The chemo treatment was a relife to receive as I can already feel the improvement in my breast, even though the side effects can be challenging for some, depending on the drug combinations. I am having 3 rounds of TFEC then 3 rounds with transzubab ( think the spellings right!) . I find it helpful sharing and have been boosted by the support of others. This journey should not be taken on your own, accept every bit of help that is offered.

  • Hiya,  ive just finished FEC T 3 rounds of Fec and 3 Of Tax with Herceptin. (trazunatab) i still have 15 rads and 15 more herceptin to go..I start tamixifen soon too...If you have any questions feel free ..to ask away xx

  • Hi Disney  I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in stomach lining lymphs and peritonitium so no chance of surgery. I was asked if I wanted prognosis and said no as I intend to battle against this blasted disease. I have had 5 doses of EOX chemotherapy and wa 9 stone 6 pounds in April and I am now 10 stone 7 pounds so things are happening. I had a scan 2 weeks ago and was told the cancer was stable which means it has not grown but the doc could see I was a bit disappointed sand I said how come I am now eating like a horse putting on weight yet cancer is not reduced. He informed me that the chemo kills the cells but sometimes leaves scar tissue and as they measure the thickness of the cancer that can explain my query. I have carried on working full time and I do go to a gym where I do quite hi intensity exercises ( with docs permission). I am 70 years of age and am convinced that the exercise has helped as I get very little reaction from the chemo I have kept quite a bit of hair a. D don't feel overly tired .  Our gym did a sponsored row for cancer research a week ago when we rowed 274000 metres in less than 2 hours and have raised £3000 plus to the charity. I rowed 3000 metres of the total and did the last 500 which was so emotional as there were a couple of hundred people all clapping till I finished it. I do believe that my exercise is keeping me going and now my wife's cancer has returned I intend to fight this as I need to be here for her as she is 80 years old and needs me so as my t shirt said. "LETS KICK CANCER TO THE BACK ROW". Good luck to all with treatment and try to be positive as I am convinced it is helping us.  Eddie

  • Hi Eddie,

Thanks for sharing your awesome story. I'm amazed that you gained weight whilst on EOX!

I've been on EOX and know how lousy it can make your feel. I think you're right about the positive impact of exercise, it doesn't only take your mind off the side effects I thinks it helps your body flush away the toxins produced as the chemo is metabolised.

    Good luck

    Dave
