Living with Cancer

I was recently given a terminal prognosis for my Oesophageal Cancer. After having an Oesophogectomy back in April this year and post op chemotherapy treatment found out that this cancer had spread via lymph node into my Liver, now inoperable. I am ok with this as luckily I am now having weekly sessions of Paclitaxel, but also a monthly dose of Herceptin. I fortunately tested positive to take Herceptin as I believe only 8/10% of patients can do so based on HER2 protein in your body.

This has proven very good for prolonging lifespan especially for breast cancer patients, but wondered if anybody else is having my type of treatment now who have gone through Oesophageal or Stomach cancer that has spread to the liver? Importantly how is it going?

Thank you.

Simon.

  • Hi Simon,

Welcome to the forum, I hope you find the support you are looking for on here.

I'm in a similar position with OC, following a Stage 4 diagnosis in 2013. I wasn't HER2 positive, so I only had chemo as an option.

At the risk of sounding insensitive, have they said why they can't operate on your liver? Is it simply because it is a secondary and operating would be against NICE guidance, or is there a medical reason?I ask this because a friend from this forum was advised that the NHS wouldn't fund an operation on a secondary cancer in her liver as this was against NICE guidance. She went private for a CyberKnife procedure and this extended her life by well over a year.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Thank you Dave for your response. I will look into the CyberKnife procedure. I know it is undertaken at the QE in Birmingham. My secondary in my liver is a number of small clusters rather than one tumour. This may not be suitable for this procedure but I will discuss this with my specialist nurse. Thanks.
