Bowel Cancer at 32

So, was looking forward to 2016 being a great year, new job, new motorbike and heading towards a new house with my girlfriend of 12 years.  Then it turns out I had a squatter in my bowel, who I now refer to as the "squatter", an unwelcome guest that has put one hell of a downer on the year - my Cancer is quite severe, having gnome already spread to my Liver, the Primary is in the Bowel which makes it more treatable, but nonetheless, I still have one hell of a battle ahead of me - I am making a video log of how each day is going, please feel free to ask questions about what the whole process is like, and what I'm using as a source of strength - I know in the coming weeks some days will be good, and some not-so, the Log officially starts tomorrow but I have an introductory video to break the ice

  • Hello Dan. I just wanted to say how inspirational it is that you are producing a video log which I am sure will help so many other people to. My gran was an inspiration to all my family when she was diagnosed with myeloma, with an initially bad prognosis she managed to overwhelm professionals with her constant miraculous results! She lived to 80 and I believe this was down to her amazing outlook, determination and positive attitude. It truly made a difference and reading your post reminded me of her. Everyone she met seemed to catch her infectious positivity and I am sure your log will do the same, I will be sure to watch and wish you all the best. Amy

  • Thank you for your kind words - my Log is a way of me keeping my sense of humour and having something to reflect on, if all is successful, I intend to go to support groups and help others who are going through the same things! Please keep in touch, kind Regards, Dan

  • Hi Dan, Good luck, you show that squatter who's boss and get it evicted ASAP. So has your treatment started yet or does it start tomorrow with the log?

  • My treatment starts today (as today's now Monday & I'll be updating my log shortly) looking forward to getting things underway, all of the staff (so far) here at my hospital have been great - thanks for your kind words & I hope you enjoy the log!!

  • OK - so I have officially started the V-log - it's a bit ropey around the edges as it's my first one, on my first day in a Hospital!! Hope you find it informative & above all enjoyable!! Thanks!

    Hi Dan,

I am sorry to hear 2016 has brought you these unwanted guests.

I wanted to message you because I am proud of you for sharing your story and for opening up so soon about this experience.

I am Jen and I was diagnosed with stage 4 Bowel Ca at age 25. Basically without trying to make something sound simple when this is anything bar simple .. It's now 2016 and in July I will be 5 years post diagnosis. So I want to say keep the faith. I know it's hard and even now I have days where I go  stuff this and I can't believe I have had it etc but please keep at it and know the evidence in myself as one small person not known to many is here at age 30 to tell you my small tale.

I wish you all the best with your battle and I know you can beat this!! Take care and rest when possible after treatment. You can do this!! Jen

  • I will keep an eye on your logs and posts as I am wanting to see how you get on. Let me know if I can be of any use for advice although your treatment may be somewhat different to mine because my secondary aka your "gnome" was ovary not liver but the primary is the same and some parts could be relivant between treatment plans.

I don't really want to use the term "looking forward to seeing your posts" because I would much prefer the illness wasn't in the zone at all but I admire your sense to share this time and I am keen to follow your story. Jen

  • Thank you for your kind words - everyone had been so supportive, it's amazing actually.  Are you following my V-Log on YouTube? If not it would be great for other viewers (especially my family) to hear about your successes, especially during the darker days - thank you again, I'm sure I'll have questions myself in the coming months

  • Sorry - jumped the gun with my previous reply - again, thank you!

  •

You are more than welcome to use my example in any of your upcoming posts/YouTube V-Log and anything I can share or help with then I am more than happy to do so.

I know this sounds a bit weird.. But in my situation I found it brought me a lot closer to some people again who I had maybe lost proper contact with for a while and it certainly brought me closer to my dad during my treatment.

It can bring many positives. I think it's just hard to accept the support sometimes but please take it from all who offer because it's nice to have a group to help you battle.

If you are ok with sharing but if not there is no need to answe this question but how often is your treatment?

What order is your treatment plan eg chemo-radio-surgery?

Thanks for sharing your story. It seems to be sad to see that this cancer is coming in more in younger people like us and I would hope research will answer why do we can fight to prevent it in future generations.

Keep up the laughter where possible as there are good days and the bad days call for sleep and rest and a good box set if your into tv or a book/games console.
