Radiation pain

I have had nine out of fifteen radiotherapy treatments. Everything was going fine. This morning I woke up with what I can only describe as muscular pain across my shoulders, neck and upper chest. I mentioned it to the radiographer she didn't seem concerned. Has anyone had such pains during their treatment?  Many thanks. Audrey.

  • Hi everyone. The pains got worse yesterday and I started with difficult breathing every breath hurt. I went to hospital as I was concerned. They were very thorough I had ECG chest X-ray and bloods taken. Apparently the radiotherapy can damage the pleura in your lungs. I am now on strong painkillers. I hope they can continue radiotherapy as I have six to go I will find out on Monday x

  • Hello I take each day and try and enjoy my life it's so hard at times but I think other people with cancer are finding it much worse - I hope today is a good day for you and all is going well

  • I'm about to start my Radiotherapy sessions after my last cycle of Chemotherapy so was interested to hear about your symptoms.

I hope you feel better soon and it's not too painful now you have pain relief.

Good luck and sending oodles of hugs.... Joanne x

  • Hi Joanne I hope your chemotherapy is going well. I was doing fine had eight sessions then on Friday I started with shoulder neck and chest pain on the side where I had radiotherapy. The stronger tablets I was given made me nauseous and sick. I returned to the hospital this morning and mentioned again to the staff about my pains. I saw the doctor in the clinic who thought it was due to the radiation. Apparently it's a rare side effect and happens in about 1-20 people. I now have a different anti inflammatory tablet, hope it works. It is quite rare so hopefully you will be fine. Post how you are doing if you can. Best wishes  Audrey x

  • Thanks Audrey and I hope things improve soon for you.
I shall try to keep you updated once I start radiotherapy but only if you let me know how you're getting on. You seem to be having a tough time.
    Thinking of you......x

  • Hi Joanne . Thank you I will definitely let you know how the rest of it goes. I didn't expect this at all I felt that I was sailing through it. Never mind it's one of those things I guess. How you coping with chemotherapy? Are you having FEC T? X

  • I was having an alright time with chemo (Taxotere & Carboplatin) with just a little sickness, taste off, nose bleeds and things until cycle 4! OMG! I thought I was going to have to go in at one point! Just had cycle 5 with one more to go so nearly over.
I'm also on the Herceptin trial which puts me in an early menopause. Those hot flushes are just something else! I'll live though so that's what's important.
The hardest part has been the fatigue since I don't do resting very well and I'm trying to keep my little company going through the treatment. Been a hard lesson but I'm doing what my body tells me now so if it says no, it means NO!
My wonderful cancer team tell me no to worry too much about the radiotherapy but I'm just trying to prepare so your insight and experience has helped me loads. Thank you Audrey & I hope you start to feel better soon. Is the new pain relief better for you? ... x

  • Hi there. Hope you are doing well. How's the fatigue? I have finished radiotherapy this week and thankfully the lung pain has subsided with a different drug regime, it is rare so please don't worry about it. I had a joke with the oncologist this week saying I had worked my way through the side effects of chemotherapy now doing the same with radiotherapy. Hope you are doing okay x
