Chemotherapy treatment

Just about to start treatment for breast cancer after surgery for a muscinious carcinoma. Feeling alone with lots of people around me. All results were good but had the oncotyp dx  test which came back high.  Had it all sorted that it was three weeks of radiotherapy now that's out the window. Guess in shock still  as chemotherapy wasn't going to be needed

  • Chemo has a really scarey image but when my wife first went in she sat in a comfy chair for a few hours as they pumped in drugs and she drank tea and chatted and she came out and we said "was that it?" then she got hyper, talked for about 4 hours straight from the steroid and pooped out on the sofa for 12 hours - about 2 days later she would have flu-like symptoms for about 36 hours and then she was as normal for the rest of the 3 week period.

She had a bit of hair loss with the Carboplatin but it was the Taxol that really did for that but she just shaved the lot and went around town with outrageous earrings and a "deal with it" attitude :c)

Not everybody's that brazen and I know it worries a lot of people but I think the ice cap systems are quite good that freeze your scalp when you're being treated and stop the drugs attacking your hair.

I know not everybody has such a good experience - she was given anti-sickness tablets but never needed to take any. But you'll find many people on here have been fine on it and have been similaly scared and have found it nothing like as bad as they feared.

Best tip - bring a good book you can be sitting around an awful long time!

  • Hi Chatter,

Try not to get too freaked out by the idea of having chemo, it's just another regime of drugs similar to many others. My own reaction was similar to Graham's wife's - "is that it?" Obviously not everyone feels that way, but that seems to be a common reaction, especially after all the hype and worry in the run up to the first infusion.

There are so many different types of chemo and everyone reacts slightly differently to them.

    Best wishes
    Dave

  • Thank you. They did mention the ice cap system but didn't think it will save mine. So I've kind off accepted it's gonna all go in a couple of weeks after first treatment. Going shopping on Tuesday to look for some trendy headwear so at least am prepared

  • Thank you dave it does help to know that. Your right it's all the unknown.

  • Hi ladies

  • I ordered from this site a lot  . I wore sleep caps instead of scalfs so at 3  pound each I had one in evefy colour . I am finished my treatment no and my hair is growing in nicely  . You do get through it  , find a style you like and try to enjoy the freedom that comes from not washing, drying and styling you hair .  Hope you feel bettr soon . X

  • I myself may well be starting Chemo in about a week to ten days time, how's yours going now - it must be nearly finished (hopefully!)
