Anyone taking Fucoidan (natural compound found in Seaweed)

Curious to know if anyone else is taking Fucoidan in tablet or other forms and what they have experienced?

Seems there is research being done although not aware of any clinical trials (~3,120 papers on google scholar for search 'fuoidan cancer' since 2011)

Thanks
JK

  • Welcome to our forum jklondon!

I hope you will find this forum informative and supportive. If you ever have any cancer-related questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team of nurses on 0808 800 40 40.

You can find out more about the safety of complementary and alternative therapies on our website, as well as some information about the difference between the two. Despite research into various types of alternative therapy, there is no scientific or medical evidence to show that alternative therapies can help to treat or cure cancer. Some alternative therapies may be harmful and cause side effects or interfere with your conventional cancer treatment. They may cost a lot of money. If you are considering stopping conventional cancer treatment to try an alternative therapy it is very important that you discuss this with your treatment team first. Even when a cancer can't be cured with conventional treatments, your doctor will still be able to help to control symptoms such as pain and sickness using conventional medicine. So it is important to stay in touch with your doctor and discuss treatment possibilities with them.

    I hope this helps!

    Best wishes,

  • As far as I can make out there have only been in-vitro tests done.

Not that this will stop the snake-oil salesmen from falsely claiming that this useful food supplement which contains antioxidants kills cancer and selling it on the internet at hugely inflated prices.

  • Hi JK

I'm interested in getting a hold of this Fucoidan but I can't find it anywhere. I've tried to purchase it from Amazon and a couple of other sources but each time I get to the 'check out', it declines my payment along with the message, '' Sorry, this item can't be shipped to your selected address''. Any ideas?

  • Not really my thing, but I think it is also marketed as Modifilan.

Holland and Barrett sell Sea Kelp extract, which contains Fucuoidan - see seafarmacy.co.uk/benefits-of-kelp-sea-kelp-is-a-natural-remedy

    Hope this helps!

  • This normally happens when the company you are using does not ship to a certain county. Not all companies will ship to the UK and be aware of customs, anything other £15 and there's a chance of it incurring import duty.. This does not include shipping. :-) hope this helps. Good luck

  • Hello jklondon,

I realise that your are not asking a nurse a question but I feel I just need to give you some information about fucoidan.

Fucoidan has been studied in laboratory settings but has not been part of human clinical trials.  Therefore it is not possible to say if this is a useful cancer treatment and very importantly if it is safe to take.   In fact it has already been shown to interact with prescribed medication that thins the blood and reduces blood clots (anticoagulants) because it can cause bleeding. It currently is not recommended to take and it needs to be part of much larger trials in people with cancer for us to understand if it is a safe and useful treatment for cancer.

The U.S hospital Memorial Sloan Kettering gives some good advice about it and you can read it by clicking here

I hope you don’t mind me posting. You are welcome to get back to us and if you want to you can speak to one of the information nurses, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040. We are here between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    With best wishes

  • Cheers Dave, I think I'll try this. I hear that Fucoidan is meant 2B very helpful.

    ''Caroline''.......

With all due respect, I think I'll follow my instincts are go with the natural remedies. I was diagnosed last January 2015. I had surgery and refused chemo. Why? Simple answer, I haven't heard many ''success stories'' with chemo. All I ever read about is, ''He/she had chemo and died 9 months later''. Well thanx but no thanx, I think I'd much rather take my chances by building my body up with as much minerals, protein, alkaline etc and see what happens.

Hi Willbeatcancer .....   I dont know what you have been reading but I have heard of MANY success stories with chemo - as a cure and to lengthen prognosis.

I have incurable disease and if I had not had chemo, would probably have died around 3yrs ago. Presumably you felt medical intervention was the best idea when choosing surgery but you do not say if you were told your prognosis was good following this anyway.  I guess you are not really trying to 'prove' your instincts which is a good thing because, as I am sure you are aware, that would be pretty irresponsible on an open forum used by very vulnerable and desperately ill people who need to trust the 'experts' at a very difficult time in their lives.

All the best to you.  Max56

  • Well said, Max!  Many people benefit from chemo, and I think we should all make that jolly clear to any newcomers on this forum!

  • Well, willbeatcancer, each to his/her own, I guess, but as Max says, please don't put other people off accepting chemo that will prolong their lives for years as it has many on here.

    Good luck in your quest.
