avoid?

Are there any foods which should be avoided if you have breast cancer?

  • i don't know the answer to that question - I suspect not, but I do know that I was given a booklet by my hospital called 'breast cancer and diet' or something like that.  You could ask your breast care nurse for a copy.  It was more about eating healthily.

I think it just helps to take more care over what you eat, plenty of fruit and veg and good stuff and not so much of the rubbish (including cutting down on the glasses wine).  I have been kinder to myself diet wise lately and lost a few pounds as a result, and I think if you just look after your general health in that way, its got to be better for you in the long run.

  • Hi dee lucky13,

I hope you don’t mind, Lucie the moderator suggested that we post something on your thread.

Lou gave some good advice.  The best thing to do is to aim for a healthy balanced diet.  I’m not sure whether you are having treatment?  For example, chemotherapy can affect your appetite on some days and so you may not be able to achieve this all the time.  Also, you may experience taste changes so you may find you go off certain foods.  But generally speaking, there are no foods you should avoid.  Another charity called Breast Cancer Care have information about diet both during and after breast cancer treatment, just click here.

There are some cancer drugs that don’t work as well if they are taken with certain foods, such as grapefruit or grapefruit juice.  But these drugs are not usually given to women as a first treatment for early stage breast cancer.  If you are due to take any of these treatments, your medical team or pharmacist would have told you about this.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care,

    Jean
