Pain 10 months after Lobectomy for Lung Cancer

Hi I was diagnosed with nsclc in July last year, I had a small tumour in my upper left lung and microscopic cells were found in one of my lymph nodes. I was told I was lucky that the cancer was caught in early stages and was operable.  6 weeks after diagnosis I had half of my left lung removed.  This operation was very painful but recovery didn't take that long really.  I was given chemo which finished in December and went back to work in January.  However, I do still have pain which feels like it's in my left breast and in the centre of my chest.  I also have numbness to the breast.  I have had 3 clear scans and was just wondering if anyone has had the same operation and if they still had pains 10 months after the op.  The doctor doesn't seem concerned with the pain as the scans have been clear.

Thanks

  • Hi Viver
It will be 7 years since our golden anniversary and buying our dog Sally and in September when I had my operation to remove 2 lobes in my right lung. This was performed at a hospital in London. The following year a tumour appeared on the remaining lobe and the surgeon would not operate but suggested High Dose Stereo-Tactic Radiotherapy. The tumor was gone in about 10 weeks but my breathing was very poor, due to scar tissue, and could only walk 20 yards without sitting for a rest. The consultant advised exercise and self motivation.
I bought a bike and an exercise bike and exercised many times daily and eventually walked our dog as much as possible
I had to hand in my London Cabbie's badge and licence and have  never driven a cab since as it was near retirement age anyway.
My advice is take whatever the doctors advise but motivate yourself to exercise, exercise and exercise. I now walk the dog 4/5 times a day and play lawn bowls a few time s a week in the summer.

    Good Luck

  • Thanks so much for your advice Lungho777. I will certainly use it. Do you have intense itching also? If so, is there anything that can be done? I have used cortizone, etc but nothing seems to help. My Dr. doesn't seem concerned and thinks it will go away but a friend that suffered nerve damage from an unrelated operation said she has had the itching for 25 years. Thanks again.

    Lots of hugs

  • I had part of my upper right lung removed in 2011 n the rest of the upper lobe in 2015. The only bras I really feel comfy in is athletic bras that comes down past my breast. Definitely never a under wire again!  I really miss being able to where a push up bra.

  • I sure can relate. I am 4 week's out from my Lobectomy. I have alot of numbness and nerve pain under my left breast around to the incision on my bad side. Some days I feel so depressed. I walk most every day. But.....somedays the pain is too much to do anything. I'm 58 years old. Very athletic. My husband passed away 4 months ago. Can't wait for the Holidays to be over with.

  • If you go to M&s they will help you as was recommended after my lung operation
  • I am 19 post surgery and still in a lot of pain in the area you mention and now it has spread round to my shoulder blade, I am having an MRI on Monday to see if they can see why i am still in so much pain still. But they say its very unusual to be in pain so long,
  • I have a very good suregeon. The pain sharp pain or tingling is usually caused by the damgege done to the nevere during surgery ,they shoot sparodic pain and the fron of the brest is like a itchy pain . its common for a doctor to say its imagination shows his ignorance .It can last 12 months or more I take gabapentine 300 mg 3 times a day . well below maxium dose takes 3 weeks to take effect , if you stop it for a few weeks 3 weeks again to work . a big difference . the pain from the operation muscels etc months ,this is one of the most painful options going . if you cancer is spreading use the keyhole surgery .if possible its the only tumor for get biopsy go for surgery painful but less chance to infect other tissues
  • Hi James

I have posted a few messages since my Bi-Lobectomy in 2010.

If you mean you have a strange feeling on your chest I have the same.

Yes, 7 years since the op and I get a numbness on the right side of my chest

and If I press on the area it can be a a slight pain.

I am very  very grateful and so happy that I get only this small problem.

Be Lucky and God Bless all patients

I had a mid lobectomy via thoracotomy to remove a NET in March 2016. I'm still numb and cold in the area of the scar. The chest pain s still as painful as it was in the beginning but down to abt 5 a month. It's like having a heart attack without the pains in my arms. Sometimes it goes through to my back. I never thought it would be this bad but have been told it could be lifelong. What a legacy for something which could have been treated 7 years earlier and would have shown up the ones in my small bowel. These were found by chance and needed a resection. Those had been there for around 20+ years. No one knew what they were looking at on the ct scans. 21st century and still not enough known abt Neuro endocrine tumours.
