testicular lumps in teenagers

I have a 16 year old son,who last year discovered a lump and immeadiately told me,after hospital visits and an ultrasound we were told it wasn't serious and he had a small op to remove it.

This friday just gone,he came to me again looking very pale and told me he has another lump, but isn't the same sore swelling as before, this one is pea sized and hard, whereas the other one

was soft and spongy in texture..

I immeadiately took him to a&e who felt the lump then told me to get him to my gp asap and have him referred for an ultrasound,my gp examined him yesterday and was explaining

general lumps and bumps then emerged from the cubicle looking concerned and told us its not something he can diagnose but needs to get him seen at radiology, who phoned me the very next day(today)

and have made him an appointment for 13 days time...im really worried as although cancer in children is rare....testicular cancer in young men isn't....is there any advise anyone can give me as to

what it may be....? id be very grateful

  • Hi   This is such a horrible  time for you both , the waiting without knowing, you will know a bit more after the appt hopefully .

Sorry I can' help with your question just wanted to reach out to you and send you a big big hug.  My daughter was treated with cancer at 10 and is now 25.

Your sons done the right thing and you've been referred  to a specialist so this can be dealt with.  Teenager cancer Trust support young people your sons age sure it can be googled,

Thinking of you both, take care, gardenlady.

  • Hope you are both ok today.

    Love Von xxxx

  • Thankyou for your replies, its really horrible at the moment, liam is ok and dealing with it which is the main thing....im not too good though, but thats just a natural maternal reaction.

I constantly keep expecting the worst, and im i don't know if it's liam or just me making a mountain out of a molehill but ive noticed him sleeping alot more..he still goes bed the same time but during the day he's going back to sleep, think it might be me just picking and panicking but not sure....x

  • Hi , I'm a bit late , hope your son's okay , I'm a bit concerned myself I'm also 16 and have found a lump but I'm shy to tell my mum . I keep putting it off .  Thanks j.

  • Jocx. Welcome to the forum.

I must start out by saying that I'm not a doctor.

There are many possible reasons for a testicular lump, and cancer is low down on the list. Although it's true that testicular cancer is a disease that mainly affects young men, it's still not very common. So, whatever is the cause of your lump, the chances are that it's benign (harmless).

That said, you now need to gather your courage, tell your parents, and ask them to take you to the GP.  Or maybe you can make your own appointment, but I wouldn't advise that. Don't be alarmed if your GP refers you for an ultrasound. That is the normal next step and it doesn't mean that the doctor "thinks" you have cancer. It's simply the way things are done these days.
