Skin cancer

Hi everyone. I’m posting here because I just found out yesterday that I’m at high risk for melanoma after previously having 2 BCC's and dealing with other risk factors. I am feeling completely overwhelmed and teary. I couldn't sleep last night because my mind is racing. I’m just looking for a safe space where people understand how terrifying the first few days of this news can feel."

  • Hello Winnie

Most of us on this forum will understand exactly how you are feeling right now. To move on from this try to find the good aspects of your situation. You have had 2 BCCs removed and cured. You do not currently have a melanoma and as you will be checking your skin regularly you will spot and report any changes immediately. Melanomas caught early have 95% cure rate. You can be proactive in preventing future skin cancers by wearing a hat, sunglasses, covering up, sunscreen and avoiding sun 11.00 to 15.00. You likely already do this. The future is bright for you, get on with living and enjoy yourself.

  • Hi Winnie,

I totally agree with Farmer Ed's great advice. You will be far more aware of your skin now & will know what to look out for. If you find anything suspicious you will get it checked out quickly due to your history, and speed of detection will mean successful treatment.

I had a melanoma 30 years ago which came back 17 years ago. I've had 7 other moles/lesions removed since then - all were benign. I'm currently in remission (No evidence of Disease) and I'm fit & healthy at 68 years old. I've never had a BCC. My dad, brother and sister-in-law have all had BCC's removed over the years & have had no further problem, so it's just down to routinely checking their skin every month (like I do).

It's normal to feel scared by the news but the shock will start to settle & you will find a monthly routine of checking your skin is 'the new normal.' Be more 'sun protection' aware & get on with your life, you'll be fine.
