Diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Bowel Cancer

In February 2024, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Bowel Cancer (I'd retired in January at 62 yrs old) There were lesions that had spread to my lungs and stomach. My wife was with me when I received the diagnosis, the hardest part was telling my two daughters! I was fortunate to get surgery quite quickly, and had a tumour removed from my bowel in March 2024. I had a Hickman line fitted, and started Chemotherapy in May 2024. After 3 months of treatment, the CT scan in August 2024 showed a reduction of the cancer in all areas. I have had scans every 3 months since, and all subsequent scans have shown no evidence of disease. My mental attitude has always been very positive, and I try to keep myself physically fit. I'm told this is a great help in handling the side effects of treatment. Apart from the odd occasion, the side effects have been negligible. I am in awe of all staff at the Chemotherapy Day Unit I attend, and don't think I would be where I am now without their care and support. Ironically, I know I am very lucky! Best wishes to everyone who is living with this disease. I'm living from scan to scan, but staying positive that it won't beat me!

  • Hello JezzaT

I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis that has led you to find us. It sounds like it's been challenging for you all at times, but it's great to know that your most recent scan has shown no evidence of disease.

Certainly, from the many, many posts I've read here over the last 13 years, having a positive mental attitude can be a great help in handling the difficulties that we can encounter after a cancer diagnosis. And it sounds like you've been very well supported by those around you as well.

We have quite a few members here in the Cancer Chat community who are living with a stage 4 diagnosis, and hopefully, you will be able to connect with some of them soon. But one thing I do know is that your story will offer hope to others in the future who find themselves facing similar news, so thank you for sharing.

Take care, JezzaT, and keep in touch to let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,
