Radical cystectomy - 4 months on and recovery is still up and down. When will it get better?

It's four months since my operation seem to be taking one step forward and two steps back just a tad fed up at present still can't do much Tony.

  • A very warm welcome to the forum Tony, although I'm sorry to hear about the struggles you've been having since your radical cystectomy four months ago.

That feeling of making progress to then have a turn for the worse must be very frustrating so it's completely understandable why you're feeling fed up, especially if it's preventing you from doing much at the moment Tony, but fingers crossed that the good days will start to outweigh the bad and your recovery will start to improve.

Hopefully some of our members who have had this surgery will stop by soon to offer their support and share their experiences and advice but if it would help to talk any of this through with someone, then our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to support you and address your current concerns about your recovery.

Living with bladder cancer can be very tough, but we are here for you Tony and are sending all our strength and support your way.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Tony, my husband went though removal of his bladder, right kidney, prostate and surrounding lymph nodes last May due to advanced cancer. He/we are nearly a year on and he still has 'down' days. Days where he can't be bothered, is overly tired and in pain.

We're assured this is all normal and tbh as the weeks and months go on he is coping better with the new normal.

What I'll say is listen to your body, don't expect yourself to be the old you , rest when you need to, reach out to family or friends if you need help it does get better but it takes time.

    Take care
