Portocath - I'm having one fitted next week to help with treatment. What are people's experiences with them? Any advice welcome.

Hello I am having a Porto cath fitted next week to help with my treatment and just wondered on peoples experiences with them - and declaring for your travel insurance and just generally any advice please - dreading having it fitted but know it will help in the long term

  • Hi Larowe,

I had a port fitted last May and just had it removed again just before Christmas after my chemo had finished.  I was really worried about having this and contemplated not having it for my chemo, but after having one chemo through a drip, which damaged the vein, I'm so glad I had it fitted.

I must admit, it wasn't always smooth sailing as my port was a bit temperamental and had to be flushed out before treatment, but all in all I was glad I had it fitted as made the treatment easier. No trying to find a vein and only a needle straight into the port, which for me didn't feel very painful and they can put numbing cream on if you do feel uncomfortable.

Sorry I cannot give advice on travel insurance as I didn't travel during my chemo and I've now had the port removed again

Hope you get on okay having it fitted.

    Toni

  • Thanks Toni - I had a pic line through chemo that worked ok but stopped me swimming and I needed flushing every week so I had it taken out in August - I thought I could mange without through immunotherapy but it’s proving so difficult to find a vein every 6 weeks so I feel this is probably my best option - I hope your keeping well and thank you so much for your response and how you coped with it
