Rectal cancer diagnosis - overwhelmed by diagnosis and worried about having radiotherapy. How bad were the side effects?

Hello, I have recently been diagnosed with rectal cancer.  I am due to get a ct planning scan next week then start radiotherapy 2nd week in December and then chemotherapy in January before surgery.

I am very overwhelmed with my diagnosis and was reading about side effects of radiotherapy.  Has anyone had radiotherapy for rectal cancer and if so how bad were the side effects.  Thanks.

  • Hi Glen

I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 9 years ago.  I was told I would need surgery after 6 weeks radio/chemo.  Me being me researched my diagnosis, treatment options, because I didn’t want to surgery.  Following the daily radiotherapy and tablet chemo for 6 weeks, I had countless mri ct scans and colonoscopy.  Three months later there was no sign of tumour or lymph nodes thad been affected.  Because the treatment had been successful I opted out of the surgery.

The radiotherapy is painless but all these years later I still have chronic fatigue and gut discomfort in addition to peeing numerous times a day.  Such joy, not!  Having said all this I am still alive and kicking thanks to our wonderful NHS.  Wishing you well for the future and let us know how your journey goes.
