Side effects after breast radiotherapy

After surgery for DCIS, I had a course of 5 radiotherapy sessions which finished 3 weeks ago today.  Over the last week I've started to feel quite washed out, feel quite sick, having headaches and got a sore throat. However, it's not all the time, I can feel OK for several days and then "wham" it hits me and I just rest, then the next day I'm fine again. Has anyone else experienced similar effects and how long did they last? Thank you

  • Hello Lou1611,

Well done for getting through your course of 5 radiotherapy sessions for DCIS. You will find information on our website on DCIS which I hope you will find useful and you might also be interested in reading the information we have on radiotherapy for breast cancer as well as on side effects of breast radiotherapy. It sounds like these side effects come and go especially the tiredness and you're doing well to rest as much as you can so that you feel better the next day. It's a good idea to mention these side effects to your doctor or nurse as they may well have some good tips for you to help you deal with these. Obviously how long such side effects may last may vary from one person to another but I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have had similar side effects before and that they will share with you how these affected them and how they managed to relieve them.

I thought I would also mention to you another thread I have found from a few months ago by  who was posting precisely about DCIS radiotherapy side effects. At the time this member was looking to hear from the experiences of others and to know whether they experienced fatigue and  commented on that thread and mentioned that they suffered from fatigue a few weeks after radiotherapy treatment but that energy levels subsequently improved.

Feel free also to get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you wanted to talk things through with them or ask them about these side effects - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that the fatigue will subside as well as all the other side effects. Do talk to your medical team as I am sure they will have some good advice for you to help you with the tiredness, nausea, headaches as well as the sore throat so that your quality of life improves quickly.

    Best wishes,
