Hair loss upsets me

I've just had a lumpectomy,  I've been lucky to not need chemo. I'm taking Tamoxifen and will likely need additional hormone suppressant.  My hair is thinning and it's really noticeable,  and upsets me. I don't want all the other side effects, my husband recently left me and I am struggling.  Can anyone reassure me?

  • Hello TallladyJ

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had surgery for breast cancer and that you're now struggling with some of the side effects of tamoxifen

We have some information on our website about hair loss that you may find helpful. Do also talk with your hairdresser for some advice and support about styling and products that you can use to help.

If you'd like to chat with one of our nurses at any point you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Hopefully the side effects of the medications that you're going to be taking will settle. In the meantime, be kind to yourself and lean on friends and family for support with all that has been going on for you.

I hope that things improve soon.

    Sending my best wishes,

  • Thank you. Do side effects settle? How long does that usually take? It's likely I'll need hormone suppressant injections,  will they make the side effects worse?

  • Hello TallladyJ

Some women find that side effects settle after they have been taking medication for a while. Others find that a particular brand of medication suits them better than another. Unfortunately, it's a case of time and trial and error. I know that this can be frustrating when you're struggling with side effects.

Do talk through your concerns about side effects with your breast care nurse. You can ask about the risks and benefits of taking or not taking these medications. It may be that the information they give you helps to make it easier to come to terms with some of the side effects you're managing.

You might also want to consider getting some support to help you with all that you've been through. The charity Look Good Feel Better has some information about courses that may be of interest to you. Maggie's offers talking therapies to anyone impacted by cancer, as well as various groups.

I hope that you can access the support you need to help you move forward TallladyJ.

    Sending my best wishes
