Is any one else still really tired after finishing cancer treatment? It's been almost 2 years since I finished chemo

I was diagnosed in dec 2022 had chemo radio and Filigrastin injections that finished feb 2024 .. I went back to work but exhausted and finally left work in july 2024 after being back at work for 12 months .. which was also during my radiotherapy. What I would like to ask is, I kept reading and keep reading that the effects of cancer treatment does not last … I just feel that that is not the truth . I feel so tired and I know my body is not as strong as it was pre cancer .. it will be 2 years this June since the end of my chemo and I’m just so tired and in pain in my joints etc .. does it get better ️‍

  • Hi, your feed popped up as I was asking the same question. I finished chemo 2 1/2 yrs ago.  Every now and then I wonder if I'm just being feeble and should pull myself together! I was told by the consultant that once chemo had left the body the side effects would disappear. However every person I've spoken to who has had chemo still experiences tiredness or fatigue to some degree along with other permanent conditions. I have to keep reminding myself this is 'normal'. I don't think it's at all psychological, in my case anyway. My life has had to change dramatically to adapt to the new normal. Full time work to part time etc. I don't fight it. I do what I can, sometimes I do too much, recognise it and pull back abit. Everyone is different but I find it helpful to chat with fellow survivors. I also tell people I'm absolutely fine, but the bouts of fatigue are ongoing and I have to adapt to it. I want people to know so they understand my decisions. I actually enjoy taking time to enjoy often very simple things instead of tearing round like a mad thing! Those days are gone and I dont mind. I enjoyed reading the other comments.

  • Hello Gerble. Wow I can’t believe it’s been 12 months since I wrote that.
well as a positive spin, I have been kinder to myself psychologically and not getting stressed when I am unable to do certain things. I have adapted to what I can do, for example bought a tool that opens jars :) never thought I’d ever need one of those things, but the strength has gone in my wrists for now, and the reason I’m saying for now is that some  days all I want to do is sit on the sofa and other days I’m ready to  go and do as many things in one day as I can while I am energised. It is 3 years now since finishing all active treatment, and I do think I’m turning a corner, I’ve lost weight from what I gained, still have some to go, I’ve started walking the dog further and I’ve bought some hand weights to strengthen my arms etc. so I would say keep positive and carry on my lovely.. my good days are more often each week and I’m looking forward to a different me, but a more determined… I’ve had enough *** now it’s my time to shine version of me :) keep well lovely and I promise you will come out the other side

  • Lovely to hear you're still improving. I can relate very much to everything you've said. Especially the full(ish) of beans some days and flaked out others, apparently for no obvious reason. Of course there are many people with many different challenges and this has taught me NEVER to judge others capabilities. We simply do not know what people may be dealing with. Good luck with the future.
