Bladder cancer - post surgery symptoms, infections

Hello

My partner has had a few urinal tract infections following bladder removal surgery several weeks ago. Has anyone else had this experience? He's on antibiotics and has returned to hospital a few times, as an out and inpatient.

He is very careful with his stoma, and hygiene, changing it every 2 days, bathing every day with the special antibacterial shower gel provided by the hospital.

He had a drain fitted as there appears to be an accumulation of fluid in the cavity near where his bladder would have been. We're awaiting another CT scan, follow up.

The repeat infections are making it difficult to get on with life, in the way that we need to following radical surgery,  to come to terms with everything. He has adapted so well otherwise, walking about fairly soon after surgery, regaining his appetite, etc.

  • Hello Alison24

I'm sorry to hear about your partner's recent surgery and all that you've both been through since. It sounds like it's been a difficult time and it's understandable that you may be struggling to come to terms with things and move forward. I do hope that the hospital team is supporting you with advice and information.

I wanted to let you know that another member posted this week  whose husband has also recently undergone surgery to remove his bladder. I've linked her post for you to read here. Hopefully the two of you can connect and share your experiences with each other.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that the hospital team are able to get on top of these repeated infections and that things improve soon.

    Best wishes,
