Scan Results

Hi, I have had surgery and treatment for rectal cancer, had first lot of scans which were clear, had the second lot Oct/Nov 2023 and received an appt through today for the 7th March for the results?

Can I assume as they are in no hurry to give me the results that all is ok?

I called the hospital and the reason for the delay is because of the strikes that have been happening.  But when I had my surgery the doctor said that I would start with 3 monthly scans but at this rate I will be only getting them every 6 months if that.

The lady I spoke to said that there were huge delays which I do appreciate but waiting on scan results to see if any cancer has returned doesn't do much for the mental health.

Just wondered if anyone had similar situations and if the longer you had to wait for results then you can assume that all is ok.

  • Hi Smith,

I am glad to hear that your surgery is behind you and that your first set of scans were clear. To have to wait until March for the most recent ones, seems inhumane. Unfortunately, there is no way to that you can take this delay as being good news. People with both types of results have found themselves in this situation. Hopefully, with the first lot being clear, these may be too, but there is no guarantee. Phone your consultant's secretary tomorrow and explain how anxious you are. If you can attend any cancellations, make this known. They often come through at the last minute, but this can get you seen a lot sooner.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, thank you for your reply.  I haven't done so yet but I will ring regarding cancellations.  When you are having treatment etc I found that the level of care is amazing but once signed back to the general surgery clinic it feels like its not important anymore and the promise of regular scans to begin with has been forgotten.  I do get the back log because of strikes but for those of us waiting for stuff its frustrating.  Will keep you updated :)

  • Hi Smith,

I know exactly what you mean. I am 14 years on from 2 bouts oof breast cancer and haven't had any follow ups for the last 9 years. Having already had one recurrence within a year, I am always aware that there could be another.

There will be some backlog because of strikes, but surely it shouldn't be 4 months?

I look forward to your update.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hey, just thought I would update :).  Since I posted I received a letter in the post with the results of my scans (which were all good), so thats all good in the end.

You would think you would be offered some kind of check ups even just once a year to give you that rest of mind.

    Thank you

    Andrea

  • HI Andrea,

I am delighted to hear that you have finally got your results through and that they are all clear.

It might be worth phoning your consultant's secretary to ask when you are likely to get your 3 monthly scan, or is the 7th March the date for this?. Sometimes we have to be our own advocates to get things done.

PIease keep in touch and let us know how your next scans go. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I can empathise with you my last chemo was17 November, the scan folliwing wasn’t until 5 January and the results should have been last Tuesday but they weren’t there dueto doctors’ strikes. I have another appointment forresults next Tuesday , fingers crossed.
