Scared

Hello am 40 have dcis in one breast am booked in for a mastectomy in January it’s all becoming to much am upset and scared I had lumpectomy which failed now this is my only option xx am just looking for someone to talk to a friend if anything xx

  • Hi Bev,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this all again. Can I ask when you were first diagnosed? I know from first hand experience, just how worrying this can be. I had a lumpectomy, then discovered another cancer, within a year. I had a double mastectomy, second time around and I still lead a busy life, 14 years on.

I am always here to chat to and to offer you all the support that I can. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Bev

I am 42 just diagnosed last week and booked in for a lumpectomy (I think) towards the end of January. You can talk to me although I won’t have a lot of knowledge as I just started posting on here just after diagnosis.

    Gemma :)

  • Hi Bev,

Have you discussed treatment options yet and are you planning on having reconstruction? Nothing will be finalised until you get you post-op pathology results back. This will be about 1-2 weeks after your surgery.  I  lost my mum to secondary breast cancer and I felt just like you when I was first diagnosed, - most of us fear the worst at this stage. Fortunately, it seldom turns out to be ad bad as we expect.

Don't worry about further spread just now. You will have more tests later on, which will give you more reassurance. I'm sure that the doctors would have already done further tests if they had the slightest suspicion that there was any spread. They usually remove a few lymph nodes at the time of surgery - I expect that this was done at the time of your lumpectomy. This would have shown if there was any spread and, I'm sure that they would have told you by now, if that had been the case.

Is your Diabetes Type 1? I have type 2, I have always struggled with my weight too, but it ballooned with hormone therapy. After I finished taking this in 2017, I took a course at my local sports centre called Weigh to Go. This was organised by the NHS and the first 10 weeks were free. I continued going after my NHS quota was up. I had to pay then, but it wasn't much. I was weighted every week, my waist was measured every other week. We then discussed eating habits, healthy and unhealthy eating, calorie counting, eating out and a host of similar topics, for an hour. After this we did some gentle exercises for another hour.

At the same time I also attended a rehabilitation exercise class, for people who had suffered from serious illnesses. Again, this was sponsored by the NHS, for the first 12 weeks. I attended these 2 classes twice a week. After doing the rehab course, I was then fit enough to join a seniors exercise class. After a year, I had lost 5 and a half stone, which I have managed to keep off since then. I am sure that there are possibly similar classes in your area, but give yourself time to get over your treatment first.

DCIS is eminently treatable and, I'm sure that you will be here for your daughter for many more years to come.

I'm always here, if you want to chat.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, ye I am o.k at the moment. Just hoping for the best really. Hoping all goes how they said it might. Just another 10days to wait till I find out the plan  :)  I just want it out so I can get on with recovering.

At the moment I feel uninterested in scars and genuinely don’t care. My husband isn’t bothered just wants me sorted.

just waiting that’s hard really .

I don’t know if I said, my son got diagnosed with lymphoma last June (he’s 6) so he is the priority really. He will be in treatment till Oct 2026.

my treatment will hopefully be sorted in the next few months. I have been off work since last June! Need to get back! Miss my job. Hopefully my son will get back school February time. ️:)

let me know how you get on. Xx
