New mastectomy yesterday

Hi I have just have a left side mastectomy and am still in hospital, My sentinel node was clear I am waiting to go home. I don’t know how i feel apart from scared.

I get the next steps on Nov 10th at my follow up appointment.

my consultant used glue only on the op so my wound is not covered at all. Has anyone else had this done please and what issues should I look out for .

is this better that having drains .

  • Hi JLD,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you find yourself in this unenviable position. You will get the pathology results from your operation on 10th November. It is always scary waiting for the results, but it sounds as if you have done well with your surgery. This is a scary time, when there are so many unknowns, but you will feel better once you know exactly what you are dealing with.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer within a year of one another. First time I had a lumpectomy and second time around, I had a double mastectomy. I found having drains on both sides was rather awkward, so I would imagine that gluing it together might be a better option. That was all 14 years ago and I still lead a busy life.

If you notice anything untoward after you get home, the best thing to do is to phone your specialist breast care nurse for advice. It is great news that your sentinel node was clear and I sincerely hope that all goes well with your pathology results. Make sure to do your exercises regularly.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Thank you so much for your reply and support it’s day one at home today. So a bit scary, but good to have friends and family around . Just been throughly spoilt with an omelette in bed . Woke at 7 in lots of pain but it’s now settling down . Had a good nights sleep so that will help .

    xx JLD

  • Hi JLD,

I'm glad to hear that you are home and that you managed to sleep well last night. Have you been given any medication for the pain? It should settle down quite soon. Waking up to an omelette in bed, sounds lovely - I'm glad to hear that you are being thoroughly spoiled.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I had bilateral mastectomies last year and glue was used . Didn’t have any problems and healed really well, just keep an eye out for any redness or heat and let your medical team know if that does happen .Do your exercises and keep your spirit up xxx

  • Hi JLD,

I had a right side mastectomy on Tuesday, so you and I are at similar stages. I’m really pleased your sentinel node was clear- I wasn’t given any information about mine, so will find out at my next appointment.

I have dissolvable stitches covered with a thin clear dressing. I had a drain but it was removed today, which has left me feeling more comfortable. I’m not sleeping well, but I’m sure that will improve in time.

I hope you are feeling ok today. I’m feeling pretty good, but very tired now as I went out for a walk.

    Take care xx

  • Hi there

how are you doing I am two weeks post mastectomy tomorrow and up and down to be honest. I have a seroma along the glued line that is sore and a bit uncomfortable it starts off ok in the morning but gets bigger by the evening. I hope you are feeling good now. My follow up appointment I’d Friday and just waiting for the HERS2 results to then give me a plan of action.

All I know  at the moment is that I will be taking meds for 5/10 years but not a treatment plan.sleeping is again up and down I don’t normally sleep on my back so it’s not naturally comfortable.

Are you taking pain relief I’m on paracetamol and ibuprofen.

not sure if the seroma will need draining as I had no drains .

    take care xx  JLD
