Sertraline for hot flushes

Hi has anyone been put on sertraline for hot flushes. I’ve been on it about a month and I’m not sleeping at all like an hour or two a night. It’s been awful. I’m also on zoladex and anastrozole.

my anxiety has gotten better though but still having hot flushes and night sweats although not as bad. The lack of sleep, dry mouth, upset tummy and headaches don’t seem to be worth it and I don’t know what to do.

I was out on clonodine for flushes work immediately and no affects to report hun

hiw are you anyway long time no speak xxx

  • Hello, I take venlafaxine for the hot flushes. I was offered clonodine but went with venlafaxin to help with my mood. Generally it is working very well and I don't feel as anxious/ moody. My daughter has just changed from sertraline to venlafaxine but this is for depression. However she was having sleepless nights, headaches etc so ask about venlafaxin or clonodine. Best wishes, Jane.

  • Hi Ahill,

I am sorry to hear that you seem to have developed some side-effects to the Sertraline. As Lara and Corlaid have indicated, there are other medicaments which can help with the night sweats. Was this prescribed by your breast care team or by your GP? Contact whoever it was and let them know how you are feeling and I'm sure that they will change it.

If the dry mouth persists, you can get a spray to help with this. There is also a salivary stimulant, in the form of a gel pastille. I still use both of these 14 years after my 2 bouts of breast cancer.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • They did offer clonodine as well but it’s just so many tablets.

im good thanks how are you. I’m still shattered from radio. I start zometa soon and heard some horror stories but it’s all to stop the dreaded c coming back x

  • Maybe I’ll ask to switch. I’ll call them next week. The sertraline is defo the culprit for the sleeplessness and headaches and mouth so maybe I need to stop it. X

  • It was at the drs. I’ll call them. I’ll also order a dry mouth spray thank you x

  • Hi Ahill,

Do call them. The spray I had was called Glandosane, but I found the Salivix Pastilles more effective, in that the moisture lasted a little longer.

Please let us know how you get on with them.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Ahill is anastrazole and xolacex a hormone treatment ? And what is zormeta ?

  • Yes zoladex is a monthly injection to stop all my hormones so I can take anastrozole which is an ai form of hormone therapy. It had a better chance of non recurrence than tamoxifen for me. Zometa is a bone infusion in the chemo ward to help my bones as I’m under 40 with no hormones and also helps prevent breast cancer spreading to bones. It’s something I requested. It’s not a nice drug but for me it really helped reduce recurrence or spreading. X

ok I understand better now as I’m on tamoxifen but I’m 49 , how are you finding the side effects of these , hsve they pushed you in to early menopause, I found tamoxifen has been not to bad a few flushers but these are now solved thankfully but I was on the tablets around 8 to9 months before effects started but I feel they are minor to what I was expecting x
