Zometa side effects

Three weeks ago I had iv infusion of Zometa and am experiencing the most horrendous joint and muscle pains.

Ibuprofen and paracetamol do not do much to relieve it and I am struggling to get much information about how

long this may continue for.. I can not see the oncologist for 10 days, the leaflet I was given says to expect "mild

flu-like symptons and aches for 2-3 days"

Anyone else have similar experience or any more information ?

  • Hello Lah,

I am so sorry to hear that Zometa has caused such horrendous muscle and joint pains and that ibuprofen and paracetamol are not doing much to relieve these symptoms. I have found information on our website on Zoledronic Acid (the other name for Zometa). One of the occasional side effects listed in the page is indeed "pain in different parts of your body such as your bones, muscles and joints" and there are tips on this page to help you cope with side effects of cancer drugs. Given that paracetamol and ibuprofen are not helping much, I would suggest you get in touch with your medical team or with your GP to discuss these side effects, how long they tend to last for and potentially see what other types of pain relief might be available to you.

Our cancer nurses may also be able to offer you some guidance so don't hesitate to get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Other members of our forum will also have experienced similar side effects after taking Zometa and I hope that they will  be along shortly to share their experiences with you. I've had a little look on the forum for you and found this thread by  who last year  reported pains in her neck after taking this drug. I hope that you will get chatting soon here with others who have taken this drug.

I hope that these side effects subside soon and that you get adequate pain relief too to help you cope with these side effects.

    Best wishes,
