Chemo nausea

Hey folks. I'm really struggling here. I have oesophageal stage 2 tumour and tube fed - nil by mouth. Currently about to have chemo 3 of 4. The first 2 have been horrendous. Bone-grinding, ceaseless nausea - episodic vomiting and dry retching - really all-consuming for 8/9 days. Doc has tried Domperidone, Ondansetron, Levomepromazine and dexamethazone. Nothing has worked. Only relief I get is from cannabis vape which knocks the nausea on the head but also turns me into a zombie and I'm afraid it's affecting my mental health. Any tips? Sympathy? Words of encouragement? Thanks x

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Sara although I'm really sorry to hear how difficult your chemo has been.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will offer their support and advice to you soon but in the meantime, you're very welcome to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040. They will be back in the office from Tuesday and available between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to help.

I hope this information we have about nausea and other ways of controlling sickness will prove useful as well.

We're thinking of you Sara and really hope something can be found to make this more manageable.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sara,

Sorry to read about your nausea. I had much the same as you for breast cancer years ago. Like you say it was ceaseless. I don't know if this will help but I did ask for a mid term break from chemo, it really helped alongside endless supplies of ice lollies ! I also got into headphones, calming meditative music as I had terrible tinnitus for some reason which added to the nausea. Anyway, it all helped massively, went back to finish the chemotherapy and radiotherapy and thankfully got through it. Sending you lots of love and positive thoughts. Hope I've helped xx
