Frequent infections

Hi, does anyone else get infections but like all the time? I keep getting recurring infections usually UTIs or mouth infections, or both if I'm really unlucky. It's turning colder here as winter sets in and I've had two cold colds and a mouth infection in the last two months. I had antibiotics for my last infection but they gave me oral thrush and made me feel pretty crummy. I've said to the GP and my nurse about it and they say it's where my immune system is compromised and to wrap up warm and keep clean, wear my mask etc etc. I do all this but I still get sick. I feel like I might have another infection about to come on but I really don't want to have to take antibiotics again!

I wish I could just hibernate during winter. I'm looking forward to Christmas but feel it'll be one where I spend most of it in bed.

  • Poor you Adele92, you must be feeling really run down with these recurring infections and as you said, one consequence of taking antibiotics is that they can give you thrush and make you feel a bit sick. Make sure you do talk to your GP about it as you have done and to mention that you are worried about taking antibiotics if you get another infection and of the side effects these have caused you in the past. It might be that your GP will have a different type of antibiotic to suggest that won't cause these issues so much or that they can prescribe something to prevent or treat these issues you have experienced.

I know what you mean about hibernating in winter... I wish I could do it too sometimes

But fingers crossed you won't have another infection any time soon and I hope you have a lovely time this Christmas with no infection and no antibiotics!

  • Hi Moderator Lucie, thanks so much for replying I really appreciate it. I am feeling a bit run down but hoping the Christmas spirit will lift me back up soon. Next time I speak to my GP I will mention my concerns and say about different antibiotics if I need them again. Side effects can be very unpleasant so if I can have one that doesn't cause as many or no side effects at all then that would be perfect. Hopefully she can help me with this. She's normally really good so fingers crossed. I should have probably mentioned it before but honestly I'm tired of being around medical places!

I know right haha just sleep through the winter and wake early spring. That would be great

Thank you Lucie! I hope you have a lovely Christmas as well.

    Best wishes,

    Adele92.

  • Thank you Adele92 for your lovely Christmas wishes. Fingers crossed you stay well clear of any infections and that your GP has options for you that would not trigger these unpleasant side effects.

I love your Christmassy avatar by the way!

  • Hi adelle, I've got medical condition called Addisons (my adrenal glands don't work so have to take permanent steroids to keep me alive and keep my immune system going and any infection have to increase my dose to help fight things, can be a right pain sometimes. I've had it since 2006, had a few blips like going into a coma now and again when meds don't work right but still keeping positive despite other problems.
