Stretching pain after mastectomy

Hi everyone, I've had a mastectomy, lymph nodes removed and piece of lung removed about 8 weeks ago. For the last week I've been feeling very uncomfortable where I've had mastectomy and all under my arm, it feels as if my skin is being stretched and its not comfortable. Can anybody tell me if this is normal and if it will eventually go away as I'm getting a bit worried now.

Thanks x

  • Hi Clare,

It sounds normal, to me. I had a mastectomy and lymph nodes removed and, three years down the line I still get stretch discomfort, I wouldn't call it pain, now.  I do get a little pain after a day wearing a bra and my prosthesis, so I use the softies in a comfort bra on a day to day basis and only wear my heavy one for dressed up occasions. If I'm not going out I just wear a vest to hold the spare close to my chest. Not JUST a vest, I hasten to add!

Hope this hasn't made you feel worse, as it is hardly noticeable these days.

    Good luck with your recovery

  • Hi Christine, Thank you so much for your reply really appreciate it. I think I will try using my softie and see how it goes thanks. This last week I havent been wearing my bra or prosthesis as its been too uncomfortable to wear while I've got the stretching pain. That's a good idea too a vest, think I'll give that a try too. Your advice has really helped me thanks, I thought maybe I was just imagining the stretching discomfort or thought I would feel like this all the time.

    Thanks again

  • I had a nhs reduction the lower half of both breasts removed for ongoing problems with my milk ducts and wore a soft bra top the type that you pull over your head much softer and comfortable when everything is healing. it kept the dressing in place for 7 weeks. it does take a while to settle down. They have cut big muscles ect during surgery the bruising takes ages to go, it was about 4/5 months before l stretched easily and wore a normal non wired bra. M&S make nice soft post surgery bras which have wider sides that contain the prosthesis they're  not too expensive and they take the vat off when you pay.
    take care

  • Does it feel like a pulling in your armpit/ down your side? It may well be post-surgical changes but it also could be cording/ axillary web syndrome. This is common after lymph node surgery & can be treated by a Physiotherapist. It's worth speaking to your team to see what services are available in your area!

Let me know if you have any further questions ️ xx

  • Hi, thanks very much. I am going for physio next Wednesday so I'm hoping it will help a lot as its is a very uncomfortable pulling pain but I've also got it where they removed my breast. I'm doing all the exercises but it dont seem to be helping at the moment.

    Thanks again x

  • Hi there,

I don't think 8 weeks is very long, your body is still adjusting. I had masectomy 2019 and it did take a while to fully adjust, it feels like it's stretching. Massaging with a good cream or scar oil I found helpful. Maybe talk to the breast nurses for some advice.

    Best wishes
