Prognosis

Hi,

My mum has secondary breast cancer in her bones and liver, she has recently been on a tablet form of chemotherapy but had to have a two week break after her first course due to her liver and heart not coping well with the medication. It's now spread to another place in her bones and seems to be progressing fast. She's not had any sort of idea of how long left she might have left and I'm struggling with the uncertainty of it all.

  • Hello Kirsten126950

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and that she had some problems tolerating the treatment that she was recently given. It's understandable that you're struggling with the uncertainty of what lies ahead.

It can be difficult sometimes for the specialists to give an idea about time frames. It's generally only a best guess based on their experience but ultimately every patient is different. Has the team suggested any other treatment to try and help manage things for her? Hopefully they will be able to make sure that your Mum is as comfortable as possible.

We know that many people find it beneficial to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat with our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to lend a listening ear and offer any advice and support that they can. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Sending my best wishes at this difficult time,

  • Hi, thank you for replying to my post, the oncologists are really busy at the moment so they can't fit her in at the moment. She has seen her GP today and has been put on morphine for some pain relief. I think I would really benefit talking to someone for a bit of support face to face, do you know of any that are in person?

  • If there's a Maggies in the town/city connected to the treating hospital, they do face to face meetings.

  • Hello Kirsten126950

I can see that ProfBaw has already mentioned Maggies and I'd second that recommendation if you have a centre near you.

Alternatively, get in touch with your GP surgery as they will be best placed to let you know what face-to-face services are available in your local area for support.

I do hope that things improve for you all soon.

    Best wishes,
