Hospice treatment to get stronger? Too weak for chemo

Someone in family has gastic cancer

inside and outside of stomach

never told what stage etc (think was kept from us)

did chemo, finished and stopped due to weakness etc & now getting quite ill - not eating, nausea, pain, fluid that needs draining etc.

just been told he is going to a hospice to get strong is this even a thing hospices do? It feels a lie.

My family have said he is too weak to do treatment so going to a hospice to get comfortable stop pain etc - get strong - then look at whats possible to be done? Is this even something thats done? I cant imagine a convo where Dr says go go here get strong then see? And done under hospice care, im sorry for going on but wonder if this is another fib im being told.

  • One of your family needs to speak to your family member's Doctor and demand the truth.  When I realised that my Mum was dying of cancer, that's what I had to do.  I have lost many family members and friends to cancer, and it is my understanding that a person goes to a hospice to die.  I am so sorry, but you deserve to know the truth.  Is it possible that your family are keeping the truth from you because they think you are not strong enough to take it?  Whatever the case, I am really sorry for what you are all going through, I have walked in your shoes and I know how awful it is, Violet, x

  • Sometimes respite care can be offered at a hospice or a hospice stay can be a chance to get pain under control followed by a return home. The language used might well have been to build your family member up and get pain under control then see what are the next best steps. It is not the case that a hospice is somewhere you go to die and can never return from. Hospices do much more than that.  If you are visiting your family member at the hospice, the hospice should be able to help you understand better what is going on here.

  • Hi as Rose said hospice isn't just a place to go to die, some people will go there for recuperation and after go home or more treatment when they get strong enough.

    Hope things go well.

  • Hello again.  Apparently a Hospice is sometimes used for respite care, so I apologise profusely for my wrong information.  I was simply going by my own personal experience of seeing so many of my loved ones (family members and friends) be sent to a Hospice to die, so once again, my apologies, good luck, Violet, x
