Progression despite low psa

My father passed away 6 weeks ago.
he had advanced prostate cancer diagnosed 2 years ago. Gleason score 4 plus 3.
psa was kept low with enzalutmide up until the day he died.
just wanted to warn you that even if you are told your psa is low but start to feel unwell. Insist on a scan.  My dad had full confidence that his bloods were foolproof. As were the nurses telling him all was ok for another 3 months. Unfortunately it wasn't the case and his cancer changed and invaded his lung and liver.
heartbroken.

  • Hello Debs74

I'm so very sorry to hear that your Dad passed away recently. It's obviously a very difficult time for you at the moment.

We'd encourage anyone who feels unwell or feels that something isn't right to seek medical advice. I hope that maybe your post will encourage others in the future to follow up with further appointments or tests if they are concerned.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the entire Cancer Chat moderation team.

  • So very sorry about your father, i found your post very surprising and helpful, I've been on enzalutamide over three years now originally diagnosed feb 2016, psa nearly 1600.

Last psa 1.6.  I'll definitely have a word with oncologist às been feeling rough last 6 months but blood test ok.

    Thanks again, and condolences.

    Billy

  • Thank you Billy.

I have read so many of your posts and they have always been words of hope and wisdom.

Yes I was very surprised as well. My understanding was always progression would mean psa rising again. My dads psa was 0.8 consistently over 2 years rising or dropping by only 0.1 either way.

apparently although unusual. Prostate cancer cells can mutate into something that does not register with psa levels. I became anxious about Dad the end of February when he started to get a few aches and pains and then went off his food.
I had to insist on a scan as the oncologist seemed happy enough with all the blood results. Dads liver full bloods bone and psa showed nothing unusual.
when he finally had the results at the beginning of April it showed the devastating news the cancer had spread.
my dad died the 26 April.
I just wanted to post it on the site. That any ache or pain or change in health should be looked into as soon as possible.
wishing you many more years of beating this awful disease. May you continue to fight it as bravely and as heroically as you do.

    Deborah.
