5 sessions of radiotherapy - side effects

I am about to start 5 sessions of radiotherapy lasting one week.  This is for breast cancer which was under my left breast and in the right quadrant.  I did not finish my chemotherapy as docetaxel put me in hospital for over three weeks with a very severe reaction.  Having been fairly positive about my treatment until docetaxel I feel scared now because of where the cancer was and the effect of radiotherphy on my heart and lung.  The consultant said that the sessions should not cause a problem and that many people work throughout this part of their treatment.  When I went to the hospital the radiographer said that I will be extremely tired afterward and should not plan to do anything for about 4 weeks.  I do not know who is giving me correct information.  So if there is anyone else who has had five sessions of radiotheraphy I would really like to know what their experience was like.  (I know we are all different but it would be good to hear other people's experiences.). Alos has anyone had a cancer removed from a similar position and did it cause a problem?  Thank you (Sorry this post is so long.)

  • Hi. I finished 5 sessions of radiotherapy in Jan this year . However it was in my right breast . All I can say is that I felt OK, no major tiredness or side effects. Drink loads of water , use aloe Vera gel and coconut oil religiously on the area to prevent redness / burns. After chemo you ll find it a doddle.

    Good luck

  • Hi Bewildered.

It sounds like you've had a really rough time. Radiation isn't nearly as bad as docetaxel so don't worry about it too much. I had 5 sessions last Oct. I went on holiday the day after my course and was fine. About 2 weeks after completing the course you'll start to have side effects. Pain and a burning sensation. Both normal and bearable. I still have a patch of skin that's darker which once again is normal.

I hope this information helps put your mind to rest. The worst is definitely over. Good luck. Barb Xx

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me.  You have helped to make me feel less apprehensive.  I hope that I can come through it.  All the best.

  • Thank you so much for your reply.  I know that I am being silly to be so apprehensive.  If I had not had such a severe reaction to the Docetaxel I don't think I would be so concerned.  Your reply has been so reassuring.  I am very grateful to you.  All the best.

  • It's a worrying time , you have every right to be apprehensive . The worst bit is when they re lining you up correctly on the bed as it takes forever to get accuracy , but I understood why it has to be done. You ll be absolutely fine. Good luck xx

  • Thank you for your reassurance.  I will hope for the best and try to be positive about it all.  I have some other things like a bone scan to get through but then almost a year from when I had the diagnosis I will hopefully be finished.  I really appreciate your reply.  Take care.

  • I had a course of 5 radiotherapy sessions last October after 6 cycles of chemo (doxetaxal and carboplatin). The actual "zapping" is completely painless and over quite quickly, or at least it was in my case. Within a few weeks the tiredness kicked in. Not the yawny, thinking "it's time for bed" sort of tired but tired like someone pulled my plug out. One moment wide awake and enjoying a TV programme and the next, zonk, gone. Got used to waking up to find I'd missed the end of the film or whatever I was watching. Very frustrating! 5 months on and it's still happening, luckily just in the evenings so it could be worse. My worst side effect by far is a very, very tender boob. It started about 6 weeks post radiotherapy and hasn't improved since then. It's OK if I leave it alone but if I forget and reach for something or turn over in bed and touch it then it is very sore. The skin has been fine throughout, it's obviously internal so creams or lotions wouldn't help. I also have a pulling sensation in my armpit when I raise my arm above my head. It's sore rather than painful and I try to do my exercises every day to hopefully improve it if not actually cure it. As you and I both know, everyone is different but I hope your experience isn't too traumatic. I'm sure you will be fine, you can do it. Wishing you well, xx

  • Sorry you have had such a tough time Moggymad62.  I hope that the tiredness and pain will improve.  Until the docetaxel I had not had much pain.  Since the reaction I have been more tired.  When I said this to the oncologist she said that ir was to be expected as I had bee so very ill.  I really hope that I don't get more tired because I am doing my dgree and need to study.  Thank you for your reply and I hope that you will fully recover soon. Take care

  • Hello I had 3 out of 5 treatements this week. Now resting over the weekend. Yes, lots of water, i was also recomended cabbage leaf over the breast... dont take any antioxidants such as vitamin E or C as they might interfere with the efficacy of the radiation... i also used Mico-RT cream, which is created for radiattherapy treatments, nowdays it is called Mico-Repair. It is a bit pricely but worth... If you decide to buy here is the discount code i used "9SLM3". I also heard that it will be good to do a lympho drainage massage so I do not get lymphodema... so massaging every evening... Hope all goes well for you.

  • i had the same problem with sensatin and lymphatic tightness... have a look at the yutube to find some video about self massage for limphodema... i am doing every evening .. or find a lympatic drainage massour near you... she/he will teach you who to massage and not have swelling ... i also use Mico-Repair cream which I can recomend see my post below... hope all goes well xx
