Tonsil Cancer

Hi,

Life has been a whirlwind since finding a lump on my neck 8 weeks ago. After scans, biopsies etc it was confirmed that I have HPV16+ tonsil cancer. I am meeting my oncologist next week and then treatment will start, hopefully soon after. I am very aware that the journey to follow will be tough. Any advice or support would be so appreciated. Feeling rather anxious about the impact it will have on my partner and children. I have read a couple of posts and am struck by how brave and postive people have been. Inspiring.

  • Hello Marwari

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with HPV16+ tonsil cancer. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things. It's good to know that you've already had a read of some posts here on the forum. We do have a community of members who have been through treatment for tonsil/throat cancer and who I know will have lots of advice they can share.

I'd recommend posting a message on this thread where I'm sure you'll get some replies as well as having a look for posts by [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ and [@Anchor1707]‍ both of whom have shared their personal blog links in posts. I know that many members have found those blogs to be really helpful.

Here at CRUK, we do have a team of nurses that you can call to chat to if you feel it would help. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 (excluding bank holidays). I'm sure they will be happy to offer any information advice and support that they can.

One thing that always sticks with me from the posts that I've read here on the forum by people who have been through treatment for tonsil/throat cancer is that "the treatment is rough but doable" so hang in there Marwari. Keep in touch with us here and I'm sure the community will do what it can to support you through this next phase of things.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn

  • Hi Mawari sorry you've found yourself joining us in the club no one wants to join. I am on Tuesday 3 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes and now living my life to the max. The treatment is hard I was 61 when diagnosed but if i can do it any one can. I have a blog it may help you with links to others on it as well www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com

    many questions please ask Hazelx

  • Thank you, the replies and reassurances are so appreciated. After my oncologist appointment on Wednesday I will have a clearer idea of what is to come re: treatment plan. I am taking each day as it comes and trying not to get too panicky. It's so comforting to know there are others who know how I am feeling and have been through what I am about to face.

    P.s I am 61 next week x

  • Hi Marwari.  You'll be up and  down my head was a total shed . But the day I met my  oncologist I was so reassured everything fell into place. I won't lie it's not easy but it's worth it. Cancer won't define me it was a mere blip in my life.
happy  birthday for next week. Let me know how  you get on. At some point you may want to chat in a personal leval you can send me a friend message.
Just remember HPV 16 + tumours have an excellent response to treatment.

  • Hi Marwari,

Am sorry to hear of your diagnosis and although treatment and recovery does have its challenges the success rate of treatment is high and is so advanced nowadays.
I was told by my consultant from the get go that he was looking to cure and I tried to stay postive through out knowing, as I often quoted, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I came through treatment and recovery and lead perfectly normal life with no ligering issues and I have also posted a link to my blog that I hope you find helpful.
Happy to help anyway I can
