Set back

Hello, Im david. I have stage 3 lung  cancer. Ive had treatment. chemop and radiotherapy. I started  Immunotherapy in December. Unfortunately;  i had a bad reaction and ended up in hospital. I then i had steroids to take for 6 weeks. So no more immunotherapy.  I had a scan 3 weeks ago. It was to see how the lung was healing. Ive been breatless, but building up my strengh through lots of walking. Im up to 3 miles each morning now. Ive been gearing to go back to work so was looking forward to my telephone consultation today.  I thought it would be pretty strsight foward. My next scan was already scheduled for November. I was ready to put the worry of cancer to the back of my mind for a while.

Unfortunately my scan shows fluid around the lung  that wasnt in previous scan and my consultant  wants me to have it drained and checked for cancer cells. Ive to go and have it done tomorow 4pm

So now im not only stresed out about returing to  work , but also worried my cancer is activce again.

    Hi Davidah,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear your story and to heat that, despite all that you've been through you are still having challenges. I sincerely hope that all goes well tomorrow and that no cancer cells are found in the fluid around your lung.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Im not sure what i think after my apointment today. The doctor doing the procedure couldnt find any fluid . He even went away to check the original scan;  just to be sure. The ultrasound wasnt showing any fluiid. So an x ray was done.  He said just to show the consultant what he was seeing.  So, im not sure if this is good or bad. He said he could see "damage" from radiotherapy ( my words) but there was no fluid around my lung,

No fluid to test to for cancer cells has to be good i guess. Will find out in june when i go back to see the consutant.

    Hi Davidah,

Many thanks for the update. This certainly sounds like good news. Have you got a date to see the consultant in June?

Please keep in touch and let us know what he has to say.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • My apointment is 7th of June. Its not a telephone one this time. I dont like the telephone ones. I prefer face to face because i can never remember what ive been told and my wife  gets annoyed.

    Hi Davidah,

Can your wife not attend the consultation with you? Most hospitals allow this when you are getting test results. You will find it helpful to write down any questions you may have in advance of your appointment. This way you won't forget anything important.

I agree. I prefer to talk to the consultant face to face too. I hope that it turns out to be good news after all. Have you decided when you plan to return to work?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  •  My wife comes with me to face to face consutations. Its tough on her. The restrictions meant she coulsnt visit me i when i was admitted. Or having treatment, she had to wait in the car.Im going to speak to the consutant. See what he says. Ive been in the same job for 43 years. Its so important to me. But i hope to go back in July.

My wife and i  are going away  today. Up the north of scotland to visit family. We havnt seen them since last september. i was too ill to travel and then lockdown and shielding.

    Have a nice weekend

    Hi Davidah,

If your appointment on 7th is face-to-face,surely your wife can attend too? It must have been particularly tough on both of you with no visiting allowed while you were in hospital. I do hope that you can get back to work in July - that's a great record, 43 years in the same job - well done!

I hope that you both enjoy your trip to the north of Scotland this week and that you manage to get some good weather.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Thank you; we had a fantastic time .The weather was very warm. I passed another mile stone to.Driving all that way. Ive not driven that far since last year.  I havnt been up to driving . My concentration wasnt very good. Maybe the chemo and stuff.

Yes; my wife will come with me to this apointment. My last one was a telephone call.

Hope you had a nice weekend, Enjoying the sunshine

    David

  • Hi Davidah,

Well done you on driving all that way! It's always a great boost when you pass another milestone. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed yourselves and, even managed to get some warm weather.

I have made the most of the weekend and the good weather by putting in bedding plants in the garden.

I'm glad to hear that your wife will go to your next appointment with you and hope that it will be good news, following your x-ray.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • So i had my apointment today with the consultant. He is very pleased with how im doing but thinks i shouldnt rush back to work.He thinks i will find it harder than i think. He says it maybe hasnt hit me what ive been through ( treatment etc)  and i should take a bit longer : but doesnt see why i shouldnt go back to work if thats what i want. So im thinking August now.

The good news is my Cancer isnt active at the moment. My next scan is scheduled for November
