Breast Pain - feels like a bruise?

Hello,

I hope you guys don't mind me posting on here but I really just need somewhere to go for advice without torturing my partner more than I already have!

About 5 weeks ago (day after 2nd covid vaccine) I developed a strange pain in my right breast it was sort of like a dull ache, this lasted for around two days. Once the dull ache subsided, I was left with what felt like an internal bruised feeling on the outer breast. This lasted for around two weeks when I contacted my doctor, he had a telephone consultation with me and arranged to see me a few days later. At the appointment, he examined my breasts and said they both felt quite nodular. He referred me to the breast clinic for piece of mind as my Aunt had BC (late 50s). He wasn't concerned about the pain.

3 days later the pain was still there if I applied pressure to my breast or lay on that side at night. I decided to visit a private GP as I was feeling really uneasy as it's not something I'd suffered with before. At this appointment, during my examination the GP felt what she described as a 'small, mobile, fluculent lump' she was confident that it was a cyst about the size of a pea and prescribed me antibiotics. She explained that by the time I got my appointment at the breast clinic the pain would likely be gone and the cyst could have disappeared and been absorbed by my body. She was correct as the antibiotics worked really quickly and I felt no pain after two full days of them.

I had my breast clinic appointment last week, the breast surgeon examined me - felt nothing suspicious and said I could have an ultrasound and they would send me on my way if nothing was found. I had the ultrasound, nothing suspicious and off I went home feeling like a weight had been lifted.

4 days after the appointment, I suddenly felt the same pain coming back again? A tender area on my breast that is sore to touch, not painful if I don't touch it? What could this be? I'm worried that something might have been missed at the clinic?

For reference I'm 27 years old, and generally healthy! I don't have any visible changes to my breast or nipples and no swollen lymph nodes in neck or collar bone (this was checked by private GP). I'm sorry to ramble, I'm just at a loss and was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this?

Many thanks in advance.

  • Hello Tweedygirl and a big welcome to Cancer Chat!

I can imagine you felt relieved after you were seen at the breast clinic and it is rather unfortunate that this same pain came back again 4 days after your appointment. It's rather reassuring that your ultrasound did not show anything suspicious. But as the pain has now come back and wasn't there when you had your appointment at the breast clinic, it would be worth giving your GP a ring I think and explaining that this pain has now returned, that it subsided after you took the antibiotics but that it has now come back again. So don't hesitate to give them a call and I hope that they can get to the bottom of this.

I hope that you will hear from others here who have experienced this before too and that they will be along shorly to share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello,

I'm in a very similar position to you and would be curious to know what happened to the pain and if you sought any more medical advice?

I am 28 years old and have been experiencing a bruised sort of feeling on the lower inner quadrant of my right breast/rib for about three or four months now. I went to my GP in October as I was growing increasingly concerned. Unfortunately, my mother passed away from breast cancer seven years ago so there is obviously a close family link to the disease there.  At the doctors I was examined by two different women who said they didn't think they could feel anything too concerning but would refer me to the breast clinic anyway as I was so worried. Fast forward a month and I was at the breast clinic where I was examined again by a surgeon who said she also didn't think she could feel anything abnormal but would like me to have an ultrasound to confirm. On the ultrasound nothing but fibrous/dense breast tissue and prominent ribs showed up. Two weeks down the line and I can feel the bruised/tender feeling again and I'm feeling somewhat anxious. I'm convinced that there is a lump of some kind there as the right breast doesn't feel the same side as the left. At the clinic they only run the ultrasound over such a small area that I'm afraid they could have missed something important.

I'm not one to go to the doctors/be paranoid about my health at all but for some reason I can't seem to let this go. I wouldn't have a these symptoms for no reason. I'd be very grateful to you if you could let me know how you're doing and what happened. I really hope you're doing well now.

Thanks ever so much for your time,

    Sophie x

  • Hi Sophie,

It does sound like you're experiencing something very similar to what I had. Did you ever get prescribed antibiotics? The cyst I had at the time was extremely small but caused so much pain - the antibiotics were the only thing that began to relieve it for me.
Although the pain did return after my breast clinic appointment, I'm going to be honest and say it ended up only lasting for a few days after I posted on this forum. I haven't experienced the pain since.

It might be a good idea to seek a second opinion if you're still experiencing discomfort. I would be confident that it is isn't something sinister after your breast clinic appointment. The sonogragher that did my ultrasound said if the surgeons done feel anything suspicious during their initial examination that's a very good sign. I hope that offers you a bit of reassurance.

I totally understand why your concerned, and you've every right to be with what happened to your mum. I'd maybe seek that second opinion even if it just gives you the peace of mind you need.

I hope you get sorted with this soon, as it's a horrible thing to have on your mind.

    Take care,

    Jenny

  • Listen.

I went to a go years ago with a stinging small pain in the breast.

It was ignored because they couldn't feel anything.

Ultrasounds today show nothing yet i have a 2cm+ breast tumor only detected via ct scan.

    And am stage 4.

    Doctors waste your time.

    Demand a ct scan ppl.

    Dont ignore the pain.

  • Hi how did you get on, I am in this position now , 11 weeks of bruisy feeling , now being fast tracked for breast clinic

  • Hi Sophie , how are you, I’m in the same boat

  • Hi, how did everyone in this thread get on? I have bruised feelings in both breasts, both in the lower inner quadrants of my breasts. Doctor did physical exam but not concerned. Just wondering how everyone got on, as those posts sound the most like what I have!

  • Hi Katy, I’m sorted now, my bruisy sensation on inner breast was something called Mondors disease, it developed into a phlebitis chord which ran to my nipple from inner chest wall.. still tender but nearly gone, 4 months later.
