Artex Removal without being fully aware of the risk

Hi,

Just finished removing an artex ceiling only to know find out it could have contained asbestos. I wore goggles but only wore a mask whilst sweeping all the waste up. The door was closed at all time and the window was open. I'm now concerned what damage this could have done. I have a little boy who is 4 in the house. Obviously he was nowhere near the room whilst it was being removed but I'm worried now about any potential harmful particles that I could have created in the house. Just looking for a little reassurance I guess

  • Hi JSC1975.

The Artex you removed might have contained 1% White Asbestos, although it's not certain.  While no form of asbestos is exactly safe, white asbestos is the least dangerous and there is some evidence that the body can naturally clear out white asbestos fibres.

We all get exposed to asbestos from time to time. Most people who get sick from asbestos are udually people who are exposed to it every day for years, and often they're smokers. In fact, asbestos and smoking are an unhappy combination.

Most likely you will be ok, but I can imagine you'll be worred about the child.

I suggest the first thing you need to establish whether or not asbestos is present in the Artex debris. There are companies where you can send small samples and they will test it for you.  Perhaps that is the next step.
