High grade (severe) dyskaryosis ... scared

Hi I received my smear results yesterday, it was my first ever one and I put off going for a year. Iv had the results of high grade (severe) dyskaryosis? I'm unsure what this means and starting to panic. The letter says they have requested an appointment for a colposcopy and I'm just scared and could do with a heads up on what to expect if anyone can help I would be so greatful. Thankyou

    I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so anxious following your results yesterday. We know that many women are worried when they're told they have cell changes following cervical screening. I know we've many women who have posted here on the forum previously about their concerns and hopefully some of them will reply to share their experiences and offer you some reassurance. 

    You might like to have a look at this information on the Jo's Trust Website about cell changes and what happens at a colposcopy appointment. 

    Please do give our team of nurses a call if you're still worried. I'm sure they will be able to give you some information and reassurance ahead of your appointment. They'll be back in the office after the bank holiday weekend and are available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm).

    I was also diagnosed with CIN3 back in 2019 and was absolutely terrified. It's important to remember that these are cell changes and NOT a cancer diagnosis. Really understanding that helped me loads. Be careful about cruising forums as well, sometimes it can make things scarier! And be patient, it can be the worst thing in the world waiting for your appointment but try and put it to the back of your mind.
     

    My first colposcopy I found quite uncomfortable BUT I've been back since, fearing the worst, and found it absolutely painless. Take a couple of ibuprofens before your appointment if you find smear tests uncomfortable/painful. The nurses will be the sweetest people on earth!
